I had 4 thrush infections and then mastitis as well, by then I decided that I couldn't take the pain anymore so at 5 months put Joel on formula. It took about 3 weeks for my boobs to settle, 11 days of expressing less and less then I stopped. Then had another 10 days or so of really sore boobs then got up one morning, and they had gone down and the pain had gone completely.

I hope it sorts itself out and you don't have to go to hospital.

Infuse half a tsp of sage in a cup of boiling water and drink 3 times a day if you have sage in your herb garden or use teabags.
Good luck hun mastitis is horrible!!

Might sounds strange but the cheapest and probably most effective is cabbage leaves. Wear them in your bra several times a day for over 20minutes each time. Keep the cabbage in the fridge and the cold leaves will feel great on your sore breasts. There are a lot of herbal teas and tablets that you can use as well and I have heard that they are quite effective but never used them myself. Another option is to go to your local naturopath or homeopath (sp?) and they should be able to recommend a good herbal supplement to dry up your milk. Keep lots of anti-inflammatories and panadol on hand too, although you probably already have those to help with the mastitis.
All the best and I hope you feel better soon.

    Author: pukeko
Subject: 26045
Posted: 21 April 2009 at 10:17am

Hi all,
well i'm at home with my third bout of mastitis. It was extra fast this time...by the time i got to the dr's my temp was up to 40 degrees!!!! I'm having intravenous (sp?) drugs the next 3 days and taking oral antibiotics too.
bubs is 6mths old and i'd weaned him down to two bfs and two ffs a day.
thing is, i think enoughs' enough as with going back to work and everything i just can't have this happening (as it is i may have to go into hosp with this later in the week if it doesnt clear)
the Dr was real reluctant to give me dry up pills which i had requested...she said i should just "put on a strong bra and go for it"
I'm not convinced that weaning him off is gonna work very well since i've had this 3 times all ready. I've given it my all with bfing and in fact have really enjoyed it (which may sound weird but it s such a nice close thing to do with your baby)
Any thoughts? or any advice on herbal vs prescribed dry up tablets?
Needless to say im feeling pretty down about it today....
