We have a celsius convector and it has a thermostat and fan to boost the temp if need be. It kept our lounge nice and toasty over winter last year, and its not as expensive to run as an oil filter.

We have a heat pump in the lounge dining room which is brilliant but really expensive to buy and install..... $4500 I think but we got a bigger one. We just installed econoheaters in the bedrooms @$199, takes the chill off the rooms and makes it cosy...not too hot and stuffy (DH insists on sleeping with the damn door closed- real crap in the summer!) Anyone that can handle a screwdriver can install them and I think they are great for bedrooms (Thanks Meg for the idea)

We have a sunbeam ceramic oscilatingf fan heater. Not sure of the exact name

I heats our place really well (and my parents too) and is reasonable cheap to run.

Last year they did a product review on Target and this one came out tops. Cheap, cheap to run, safe and heats the room really well. They ended up selling out of them last year as they were so popular.

Not entirely sure how they would work in a huge room though.....

For a really big room I'd probably want to look at a heat pump if you can afford it

I think everyone's right - both of those options are pretty inefficient, I had a look on Consumer and they look about the same: (I assume when they say two-bar heater they're referring to convection heaters?)

Fan heater - 2 kW 2000 - 36c hour
Fan heater - 2.4 kW 2400 - 43c hour
Heat pump - 4.4 kW heating output 2000 - 36c/hour
Heated towel rail 80 - 35c day
Heater - one-bar 1200 - 21c hour
Heater - two-bar 2400 - 43c hour
Nitestore heater - large 3300 - 33c hour
Nitestore heater - medium 2500 - 25c hour
Nitestore heater - small 1700 - 17c hour
Oil-filled heater - small 1200 - 21c hour
Oil-filled heater - medium 2000 - 36c hour
Oil-filled heater - large 2400 - 43c hour

I just cut and pasted the table, does it make sense?

But at least you are steering away from gas, unducted gas heaters are really bad for your health and expensive too. If you own your own home, then I would go for a heatpump or fire. It would save you a lot of money in the long run.

It really depends on the m2 of your area. I think the consumer website has a pros/cons list. If I was you I'd go to a heating shop just because the sheer size of your living space.

At least there you will be getting information from a person who is only there to sell heaters not lap tops & TV's as well

If you own your own home then I'd be more inclined to look into the cost of one of those heat pumps, I think it would be better in the long run.

Hi there

 

Im looking for a heater to heat up my home efficiently. We currently have a gas heater at the moment however it's going to cost us about $120 to $150 pm to run....We have an open plan living in the lounge dining and kitchen area so I'd need something that could heat up the place pretty good especially in the mornings... I went to Noel leemings yesterday as I've heard that oil heaters are pretty good but the guy at noels tried selling me a  Convection heater $260, after that I went to bond and bond & that guy steered me clear of convection heaters and told me to go oil heater $150, Fan heater is out of the question due to the amount of power it would use.... So now Im confused...

 

What are your personal experiences with electric heaters....I need to look at the efficiency for it to heat up the house and also the power consumption....

 

Any advice would be good. I dont trust some of the guys at the stores as they just want to sell sell sell....

 

Im leaning towards oil heater, not just coz of the price but the guy from B & B  sounded pretty sincere and he wasnt trying to sell me one of the most expensive heaters...He actually told me that the convection heaters are no good, but who knows....
