I'm pretty sure Sebastian comes from a word meaning something not so nice, so thats probably why people don't like it. I think its and ok name.

Saffron, I like your theory but we had the exact same problem last time and it was a boy so think its the opposite for us Poor DS wasn't named for about 24 hours.

The boy's name Zeke \z(e)-ke\ is pronounced zeek. It is of English origin. Short form of Ezekiel, Zaccheus, Zachariah, and Zachary.

I also like Zeb, \zeb\ is a variant of Zebediah (Hebrew) and Zebulon (Hebrew)...very similar to Seb but completely different full name, so you might win your DH over with this one?

You know with Dominic (we didn't know that he was a boy) we just couldn't focus on girl names and were adament about the boys names we liked. It was the oposite with Isobelle, just couldn't agree on a boys name. Theres the usual - Michael's and Matthew's maybe too similar to Mac.
In Oz they shorten everything, even already short names - Daz and Gaz, Baz.

I did think about Ezechial (but can't spell it! ) and shorten it to Zek but am undecided on that. Love Xavier but Xav isn't a real name.

Love the name Syd but don't like Sydney and can't find anything else to length it with!

Quinton I like but our dog is called Finn, so couldn't have Quinn and Finn....both the dog and child would be confused.

I love Emmett and also Jenson but they shorten to girls nicknames.

So did I! I worked with a guy called BJ (he was a senior officer too) and I just *couldn't* call him BJ, even though that was everyone else did!

I just consulted my 'favourite boys names list' and have realised that most of my favourite boys names sound girly when shortened. Israel (Issy), Emmett (Emmy), Emil (Milly) - oh dear. Sorry I can't be of any help!

Thanks for all the suggestions...naming a child is a nightmare Doesn't help that we are both teachers and opinionated but there are def some there that we hadn't thought off that will now be up for debate!

The hard thing is that the shortened name will not be his nickname it will be his actual name. We very rarely use Mac's real name and we want the same with the second.

Ooh had another thought, what if you had 2 names, and just used the initials of them for the nickname - like weegee for example calls Jeremy, JJ.  Or have the first name starting with C, then middle name starting with J, so it's CJ, and so on.

I'm going to have to bookmark this thread for future reference, some great suggestions here! We considered Isaac with the intention of shortening it to Zac but you can't have Mac and Zac really can you?

I love Ned, in fact I wanted Edward for a while cause I liked the idea of shortening it to Teddy, but DH was dead set against it. I loved Sebastian too, same problem though, DH didn't agree.
I also love Tobias (Toby) which DH also didn't agree to but I had made up my mind since he didn't have any suggestions lol, lucky for him we didn't have a boy.

I've just met a Mum here with a Ned - short for Edward. So it's not real "out there" but not overly common either. And I reckon Ned is a really cute name!

Bummer that your DH isn't keen on Sebastian. I really like that too, but my DH didn't like it either.

Joe is a great name  How about Joseph? (probably too traditional)

Elijah is traditional but not really mainstream and Eli is such a cute name.

Arlo is short but definitely not traditional.

Was just coming back on to say that I am not a fan of traditional names only because of DS's name. I kinda think my second child would feel unloved if he got a traditional name when DS is called Macauley (Mac).

Have ruled out Josh, Ben, Andrew, Leo, John etc.

I have an Andrew which can be shortened to Andy or Drew (but mine doesn't like any so is an Andrew), and a Joshua that is a Josh.

There is Benjamin that can be Ben, Jonathan that can be John.

Hey Ladies,

We have picked out a couple of girls names but as per last time we are very undecided on boys names. I would love for our child to actually be named at birth this time but we are struggling.

I really want a long name that can be shortened to a 3 or 4 letter name as then it suit DS name.

I love the name Sebastian but DH is dead against it as his mum and gran call naughty kids "little sebastians" but Seb is just so cute.
