I havnt seen the add but it does sound like they are preying on parents insecurities!!

I was under the impression that a child (on formula) is fine to swtich to cows milk after 1 as long as they had adequate diet.

It dosen't say anything about not breastfeeding, however, the general (and very wrong) consensus out there in public land is that it's not nutritionally sound to feed them beyond (and this depends on which old wive you are talking to)... and that it is benefitting only the mother etc etc.
Whcih is of course all BOLLOCKS, breastmilk is nutrioally packed especially for YOUR baby and what s/he needs no matter how "old" they are. However, most people don';t feed beyond 18months, even beyond one.
Personally I feel its a bit like Janine said, preying on peoples insecurities. I still haven't seen the ad (must try and watch more tv) but I don't have a problem switching my kids straight onto cows milk.  I stopped BFing at 15mo and by then M was having cows milk too plus a great variety of other high nutrient foods so I didn't see the need for formula.  When she went through stages of not eating much we'd just supplement her with vitaplan which is ok after 12 months and which we keep in the cupboards for DH and I anyway.

umm forgive my ignoarnce but isn't anchor mighty milk got extra bits in it for kids. The gremlins were on it for about 2 mths coz they were underweight and the dietitian recommended it but then the paed said it was a waste of money so I ditched it in favour of cows milk.

Of course if you listen to my mother, we should have ditched the bottles long ago. I saw that add and DH and I both were like huh??

I thought that because my child id on formula he wouldn't need it after 1. If you were only breast feeding til 1 would you then give formula.

We are not up to that stage yet so it sucked us in a bit does he need to have formula after one. Or can I give him straight cows milk or cows milk powder.

And would be good to know that as when we go oversea's for 2 weeks do i need to take the whole blinkin tin with me. and his bottles too??

I crackedup at the fact that it implied that they need it in case they omg share toothbrushes or something with other kids. ROFL! oh cos that will give them so much more.

they just are trying to find any excuse to pray on people's worries about their children and make them think "oooh i need this"

I do agree with the others in their reasoning though that well, if their child is still primarily a drinker rather than an eater.. that it probably might contain more that normal cows milk... it is hard however to get rid of the milk after a while.   and if you look into what a childs needs are of certain things you'd be surprised... picky eaters often are the ones just eating exactly what they need. Considering these days 3 slices of cheese can give you most of your daily calcium needs, our kids probably eat far better tahn we do... because they still have their satiety signals intact so only eat what they need which is often very small amounts.

I nannied for a wee girl who at age 2 would happily drink plenty of bottles of milk, but would hardly eat anything. in the end her mum got me to take the bottles home because she knew she'd give in and give them to her if she wouldn't eat food just so that she'd have something in her system. but that was the extreme - she'd gotten to the point where she was a very lethargic pale wee girl, who would not eat anything. it was a hairy few days but once she got eating she got better really quick.

Both my girls are on toddler milk as they are not big eaters. My reasoning is: why give them only cows milk when the toddler formula has so many more vitamins + iron etc. And it's not that much more expensive either.

neither did I... I kinda thought they were recommending it instead of cows milk not BFing? but I never really concentrate on TV that much so maybe I missed the point?

I give josh toddler milk for the reason not everyday he will eat what he is given and i think of it as a bit of a top up to make sure he is at least getting what he needs. I dont find it expensive either as its only at night before bed (i give him cows milk in the morning and water or juice thru the day) and a tin lasts ages unlike in the early days when he was having a bottle every 3 hours.

I believe toddler milk is such a waste of money! You should be giving your kid a balanced diet so they don't need all that extra stuff. Just good marketing to try and scare mums into using it I guess. Formula was made to be a substitute for breastmilk if you can't/won't do it, but seeing as they can have cows milk from 1 why would you bother continuing to buy stuff like that?

And hey if anyone chooses to bf up until 3 then good on them I say. I also saw this ad last night.
It sparked a conversation between DH and I (both on the same side).

Personally, I have no problem with extended breastfeeding (up to 3 years of age), so in that respect formula is a waste of money.

However, if you can't, or won't/don't breastfeed up to 3 years of age, their solid diet should be balanced enough to make up for the fact they're not getting these nutrients from formula/breastmilk.

Also, regular exersice, good hygeine and common sense are contributors to a healthy immune system. (*adited to add, on further thought: as is letting them eat dirt and play in sandpits!)

Woah. Tangent much.

i saw the new ad on tv last night for a toddler milk and had to laugh at the contradiction... its alright to give them a toddler milk but dont breastfeed them that long - which would provide what the ad claimed they were needing...
