Not sure how it works in NZ but a friend here in the UK discovered upon the birth of her first child that her and her husband combined had the genetic thingywotsits for a very serious medical condition that affected about 50% of their female children so when they decided they wanted another baby they had some tests done at 12weeks to find out the sex of the baby and if it was affected and while the baby was female it was clear of the genetic condition.

So there are ways to find out on medical grounds the baby's sex and if they have a genetic condition within the timeframe that allows for termination to be considered.

I think the idea of having the test available after 12 weeks is a good idea.

I would be tempted to use it but only cos dp didn't want to know the sex and I kinda did but I wouldn't bank on it iykwim.

I wanna know how it actually works it can't just be hormones surely?

I don't think I quite got the right wording either.
I meant that if you're using the test to rule out a (for example) female fetus because (again, for example) you have a very strong family line of breast cancer, then I feel it's the wrong way to go about it. Mainly because the test boasts it's only 90% effective, so you could be aborting an otherwise healthy fetus.

I think if you are wanting to have a child, but not wanting a child that carries a defective gene, then there are other (yes, more expensive) options available (chromosomal testing + IUI/IVF)

Anyway. I'm not wanting to cause debate.

I do agree that it should be something that you can only get through a doctor or midwife. I think it's definitely got novelty value, but I think it's just a case of science crossing the line.

personally , I would use it for curiousities sake, but id still be more interested in what the 20 week scan said...besides you get to SEE them at the 20 week scan , much more exciting imo

I think if its used for people who have hereditary conditions affecting one sex, thats a different story to those who go "oh we just wanted a boy , your not , apparently , even tho this test COULD be wrong , so we will terminate "

Its a cool idea, but I personally would bother with it. I would just wait for my 20 week scan, the sex of the baby (to me )shouldnt matter, as long as they are healthy!
If this bubs comes out a boy, as long as he is healthy I dont care!

I was completely wrong, I was 95% I was having a boy and had even bought blue clothes, and almost fell off the table in shock when I was told girl at my 20 week scan.

I've always knew what I was having by instinct. I may be wrong but don't most women have a pretty strong 'feeling', in my experience they tend to be right as well. I think I would use it simply for curiosity, but in saying that I wouldn't go ahead and purchase any gender specific clothes or anything until the 20 week scan anyway, it could be a very costly experience if it got it wrong. And I certainly wouldn't terminate based on sex of the baby but I do think there are people out there that would.

As some others have said it should be available on prescription from a MW or Doc after 12 weeks.

Well if I EVER get UTD I am going to use it! I think it's an awesome idea! But that is because I am not the type of person who would ever terminate a pregnancy based on sex.

I agree with Aprilfools, I think it should be available from 12 weeks so that would lessen the chance of a termination being granted.

I don't really think the 'type' of person who is so 'meh' (for lack of a better word) about their pregnancy would bother paying that much to find out if the sex if they were essentially planning on terminating? Me too, it was a LONG wait til 20 weeks to find out lol! A bit scary to think of people using it for the wrong purpose though, I cant imagine terminating a baby that wasnt the preferred gender Certainly a can of worms......(lol at the emoticon Charly!)

Well I would use it, wish it was around when I had a m/c at 12weeks would have loved to have know if it was a boy or girl.

I would never think to terminate over the sex of a baby & there will be a lot of people out there like me. I personally think that there are always going to be people the will use it for the wrong reasons but agree with April fools about the genetic screen based on sex- I feel the could be more aqurate with the scans etc but I guess you would have to wait too long for a scan.

Personally I would be happy with a boy or girl. All I want is a healthy bub(s)

Even though it works from 8 weeks I think it should only be made available on prescription from dr or midwife once you reach 12 weeks.

I'd buy it, or DH would most likely. I found the comment from one woman interviewed that she felt more in control finding out the sex a bit odd. When we found out we felt even more bonded and excited (although somewhat concerned he wouldn't have a name coz we couldn't think of anything) unless she meant more organised I thought that is the attitude of someone who would use the test to 'pick'.

I do however know someone who never wants to have kids nor do her sisters because she's carrying a genetic abnormality that only effects males. I think it would be cool to try but I do worry about how many people would use it to decide whether to continue the pregnancy. lol!!! Yep you can buy the test here for about $100. But its causing bit of an uproar re sex discrimination and woman potentially choosing to terminate if they dont get what they want.

MindyW I was just thinking that - a scan is around $80 wouldn't you just get one of thpse done.

I can only see it benifiting those that have abnomalities in a certain sex. But yeah can see some people choosing their babies sex from it.

B interesting if someone from here uses one and if its right.

I was googling the same product when I was pregnant with Jackson (I was DYING to find out what sex he was!) And at the time this product was about $700

Anyone see the news tonight on TV3? the new preg test that is already in Australia and coming to NZ in a few months. It apparently can tell the sex of an 8 week fetus..
