hi huggyhugz,welcome to OhBaby! :)

You only need to call a midwife if you are pregnant.

You need to have a consultation with a gp and if necessary they will give you forms for blood tests and they can also give you a form for an ultra sound which is done at a local ultrasound clinic (I can't remember the proper name for them but your gp will be able to tell you).

GPs charge alot more for casual patients who go to any medical centre as opposed to patients who are registered and only attend one GP practice. If you register with a GP the visits are pretty reasonable, mine is only $15. But if you go to a GP without being registered you will pay the high fees.

Hi everyone, I live in Newmarket.

I'm not sure what domestic GP rates are but the last time I saw a GP for flu here, I paid $60 for consultation and another $70 for medication at the pharmacy.

I come from Malaysia, so that kind of costs for medical services is considered very high for me.

I'm not pregnant yet. But I have some questions about my body and would really like to do a preliminary check (blood tests) and a ultra sound to confirm I'm alright.

How do I get to a midwife? Is there one near where I live? I don't drive, and take the bus and train wherever I go, so it's really hard for me if it's far from where we live.

Hi Bea, welcome to NZ and ohbaby

It's common for most people in NZ to just go with a midwife (can get forms for blood, ultrasound etc through them too), I'm pretty sure it's free if you're here on a visa. If you want an OB you have to pay for it I think. How many weeks preggie are you?

Where abouts in Auckland are you? Hi

I live in Auckland but I'm not from New Zealand. My husband has a job posting here for a year and we have just moved here.

I'm feeling like it's time for me to have a chat with a Dr, do some blood work and ultra sound. But we are foreigners and I am on a accompanying spouse visitor visa. If I go to a private doctor, the fees will be hard on us.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good public doctor or OB/GYN? What's the process here? Do I have to go see a GP to get a referral first?
