Don't think there's much you can take, I do like the Compeed patches though, using one right at the moment.

I had huge outbreaks while I was pregnant too, (and have two as we speak)
Tysmummy and Monica strange that you were told it was ok to use both of those I was told they werent safe.
I went to the health food shop and got lucas pawpaw cream and something called colodial silver (not sure I spelt that right) using the two together seemed to work and most were gone within 4-5 days. Have you talked about Lysine with your Dr? Or Maybe some toner to dry the sucker out so it will heal over faster. I found that I had a huge breakout early on both pregnancies, as well as a secnd bout with this pregnancy. The chemist I spoke to suggested Betadine cold sore ointment. It does colour the area, but it seemed to do the trick

Well I must have jinxed myself talking about it because this morning I woke up with TWO horrid coldsores, one bottom, one top lip! So depressing. Apparently our immune systems are working overtime so it is likely we will get a few over the pregnancy

Phoned my Dr to see if I could try those Compeed Coldsore patches (have heard they might at least HELP), but he advised against using them as I haven't tried them before and who knows what sort of reaction I will have. Thanks heaps for the suggestions. Have tried most of them though....not sure if I'm keen on putting nail polish remover on my lip though, that stuff is deadly...haha

Hi Katie-Ann!

Argh, I SO feel for you! I am very similar to you, mine are always HUGE and I wish I could run away and hide in a closet for 10-14 days :-) I too seem to have some success with aciclovir tablets, but the Dr says they are a MAJOR no no during pregnancy. Basically i think you are supposed to just let it run its course I'm afraid :-(

I have tried a THOUSAND different natural remedies though, so maybe one of them will work for you? Have you tried:

- toothpaste (don't know why!)
- ice
- tea bags
- nail polish remover (very harsh!)
- some people swear by popping them and then putting alcohol on the wound (which I have never been brave enough to do!)

I have also tried a number of creams, potions and herbal remedies, all with no success :-(

The only thing I am doing at the moment is using this UK stuff called "licorice balm". Go to Skinshop: www.skinshop.co.uk.   It is supposed to help prevent them, but is a bit pricey.

We should so start a Mum's to Be with Coldsores coffee group! Hi everyone

Since I was about 8 I started getting really bad cold sores. They are bigger than the ones most people get and are really painful. When I can to New Zealand about 3 years ago, I was prescribed aciclovir to prevent the cold sores. Every time I went off it I would get a cold sore straight away. How ever I stopped taking the aciclovir about 3 months ago and haven't had a cold sore. But this morning I woke up with the beginnings of one and I can tell its going to be a really big painful one. I called the dr. but only was able to leave a message with the nurse, and I called the pharmacy and they said it is not recommended to take while pregnant. Does anyone else suffer from cold sores? Do you know any alternatives that may help? I feel like I have tried everything before and aciclovir was the only thing that worked for me. I hope I don't have to suffer through 9 months of bad cold sores.
