Yeah you won't get that flu twice but there are loads of different strains around, so if you have swine flu you could still get one of the normal flu's or if it's normal flu you could still get swine flu or one of the other normal flu's that go around. That's how some people have the flu jab and still get the flu because they catch a different strain, the jab is made for what they expect to be the most common one but doesn't cover all of them.

Melnel I would see how you feel on Monday, you would probably have symptoms by then if you were going to get it, or miss Monday but still plan to do the Wednesday one.

Is hard with any of these things as you don't know you are contagious until it is too late. I work in a Pharmacy, and some time this week I contracted the flu. Incubation period before showing symptoms is anywhere between 2-4 days. Last night I was feeling a little under the weather, and got a fever overnight. Sore throat, aches and pains, and this morning I vomited quite violently and have been in bed all day.(TMI). I rang the doctors and they saw me at the back of their clinic to test me, which hopefully I will have the results for tomorrow. melnel-yeah we are he's had a bit of a runny nose but nothing else...

in terms of exposure ..I'm sure he's probably been exposed at lollipops on sunday or one of his three coffee groups or anywhere else he's been..it's very quickly spreading and while I obviously don't want him getting it I imagine he's been around it unknowingly already:( still annoying me how much the media are making of it like it's a deathly plague:(!

Thats crazy Bobbie!!! I think I might have gone a wee nutso on them if they told me that.

The chances of Jake or I having the virus are slim, but I would feel pretty stink if I was carrying it and got another bubba sick.

Might ring the surgery back and see what they suggest. I dont want to put my life on hold for a very big may be, but on the flip side I would be pretty peeved if one of the other mums rocked knowing they have potentially been exposed.

Total bummer, I was really looking forward to those two classes.

One of my friends on FB just reported that her son has it (in Chc) and that he had a fever of 42 but they managed to get it down to 39 by the time he got to the ED. DH just phoned and a colleague has been sent home as the guy her husband sits next to at work has confirmed swine flu.

We were talking and I said if it were me I would have stayed home and got tested before going back to work. DH didnt completely agree.

Fingers crossed she doesnt have it and it hasnt been passed on to DH.

I have baby massage class on monday and movement class on wednesday.. Do I go or keep Jake away from the other kiddies just in case?

yeah i think they mostly mean third trimester as the lung function of mum is diminished and can cause pneumonia and then pre term labour etc..

There was an ad in our local paper for the flu centre. Says to phone 0800 37 30 37 if you need an appointment but that most people should just stay home and don't need to see the doc, same as normal flu, only to see them if you have another medical condition that could cause complications (pregnancy might fall under that)
They also have a website www.fluinfo.org.nz

yep like all the other types of influenza,   

most GP's in our area have big signs outside asking people to wait in their car if they have flu symptoms and their doc will go out to the car and see them, and if necessary fax a script thru to their pharmacy for them.
weve had rediculas amounts of people asking to buy masks etc,

if i was you tho, if the child was at school still (which i dont think they would be) id keep mine away from them,
last thing you need being PG is getting any kind of sick at all,

I expect if that child is ill he is no longer at childcare and probably spread it around before he even had symptoms so I wouldn't bother keeping Ethan away as I don't think it would help. That child won't be back until he is better and no longer contagious.

Chch has a proper centre set up somewhere in city (I saw it on the news) and when you phone up the doc they are directing people to go there instead of your normal medical centre. They also said on the news that half the people who get it won't have any symptoms and most of the rest will only have mild symptoms.

It would suck if you guys go it, but realistically you would need to quarantine yourselves if you want to be safe as you could pick it up anywhere (like you said) and the likelihood of getting complications with it are very low.

I texted you about Spencer, he has a runny bum and temp and so do three other kiddies who were at lollipops on Sunday, so it looks like they all picked something up from there. its only suspected...so even if i kept him home that child would probably then be back after that i guess? if i keep him off i have to keep him off for weeks i imagine? I think at the rate it's going he's more likely to get it from the mall or any of the three coffee groups we go to:( he only goes 8 hours a week and he's done now.. I was freaking out but I'm not so much now I'm just going to be as safe as we can and hope that the case at school is just normal flu... (not sure when they get results)

although it would totally suck to get it pregnant of course you are definitely right there!!! I'd be tempted to keep him home. You dont want to deal with flu (yours or ethans) AND be pregnant feeling tired and sick. just my thoughts. There's an inhaler type drug called Relenza (I think) which works like Tamiflu but because it's taken through the lungs is thought to have minimal transferrence to the unborn baby. It helps prevent secondary bacterial infections so if you do get sick that's probably what they'd give you.

My biggest concern is if I do get sick with *any* flu it seems like it will be bloody hard to get medical advice and help. Healthline is overloaded, GP's often don't want you to visit their clinic sick and the ED at the hospital like you to have a referral from your GP. Being pregnant doesn’t make it more likely that you’ll become infected. But if you are infected, pregnancy makes complications of the flu—any flu—more likely and often more serious. And women in their third trimester have reduced lung function because the baby takes up so much room. That may make pregnant women more susceptible both to influenza viral pneumonia and to secondary bacterial pneumonia.

If the mom does get infected, is that a threat to the fetus?
Not directly; that is, the mom won’t pass the disease to the fetus, and it won’t harm the fetus as, say, chicken pox can.
