Murderer Clayton Weatherston has reportedly been moved into at-risk prison unit after a bounty was put on his head.

Weatherston was yesterday convicted of fatally stabbing his former girlfriend Sophie Elliott 216 times.

Two sources told Newstalk ZB Christchurch Men's Prison inmates had taunted Weatherston from the moment he arrived at the prison.

One of the sources said $55,000 had been offered in exchange for Weatherston's "unpleasant death" and that price was expected to reach six figures.

A Corrections spokesperson said the department did not comment on a prisoner's management for safety and security reasons.

All newly sentenced prisoners were managed in accordance with their custodial requirements.

It is hard to grasp the suffering & pain that Sophie endured, now family & friends on both side have to live with it & rebuild their lives.

I hope the old saying "what goes around comes around" & that he meets a big hairy lad on the inside that tears him up everynight & hands him around to his friends.

I don't know about the death penalty but I certainly don't think our 'life' sentances are long enough. Judith Ablett Kerr did what lawyers are sworn to do - uphold the law and represent your client to the best of your abilities. I don't know how she (or any defence lawyer of psychopath killers, rapists and pedophiles) sleeps, but she is the person you would want on your side if you were accused of a crime.

Thank goodness they came back with guilty - I was surprised it took that long but that man is seriously ****** in the head.

Sophie's mother must be the most amazing person. I think the fact that she's done her best on this case actually proves that she is an amazing lawyer. After all she didn't come up with the ridiculous defence option of 'provocation' - but she is using it correctly. I heard it whilst I was driving and I was just about in tears I was so relieved. I feel so sad for her Mum and I can not believe that the victim can be treated so badly. It is like she was being violated all over again.

Just to add ... I have very strong feelings on the trial, but be aware that there are issues around discussing ongoing trials in the public arena. I think the last thing anyone would want is for the lawyers to say public discussion influenced the jury and request another trial.

I agree, in court his behaviour was odd and arrogant. I don't understand how he thinks what he did is not murder but manslaughter, especially when he went to her house with a knife and scissors, with an intention of killing her, come on!

I HATE how much he seems to be enjoying being on the stand. I hope the jury is seeing how arrogant he is.

Ew he is just horrible and my heart breaks for that girl who must have been so excited about starting a new job. Not to mention her mother, what that lady must have gone through.

He said he killed Sophie because of all the hell she had put him through.... what about the hell he has inflicted on everyone else by being selfish and killing her.

I don't understand the manslaughter defence, it makes a joke of our justice system that they would even allow such a defence. I can't imagine how he will be found anything BUT guilty of murder. I agree with everything said above, the guy is a complete psycho.

And he sits in the stand laughing and joking about him being 'top of his class' blah blah blah. If you kill someone without meaning to do so (manslaughter) then surely your whole demeanour throughout the trial would reflect remorse and utter disgust with yourself.

I can't understand how he can even be allowed to give provocation as a defence - even if she looked him in the eye and said "kill me!", it still doesn't give him the right to kill her! Provocation my big toe!

It makes me so mad that the lawyer is going for manslaughter - I simply cannot understand how cutting/stabbing someone 216 times could be manslaughter and not cold blooded murder?

I can't even watch anything to do with this on the news as it just makes me so angry. He is a awful man who I hope rots in jail for a very very long time.
Its just unimaginable what her poor mother must be going through. I agree, the fact that he is allowed to tarnish her memory is shocking. If he doesn't get put away for a long time charged with murder then justice has not been done imo.

This guy makes me sick, each time I see this man he makes my blood boil...

the fact she was packing to move to another city, starting a new life, he obviously was never going to let her go and live her life without him so he planned to kill her, no body carries a knife that size, just in case.

He sounds like a control freak who put her down constantly, and she was so gorgeous, young, smart, had a lot going for her. It seems like if he coudln't have her, no one else would.

To say I am unimpressed by the narcissistic bedwetter defence put up by her attacker would be an understatement.

The fact he gets to use the provocation (ie. she made me do it for being mean to me) as his defence makes my blood curl. It's bad enough that he killed her in such a heinous way, but that he now gets to trample her memory as well makes it so much worse.

My thoughts are with her friends and family.
