The worry can be a bit overwhelming and then a good gain just relaxes you a bit. I am sure your little boy will be fine in the long run, just like mine will.

And yes, having a wee babe is quite cool when they grow so quickly. I keep telling myself to enjoy the fact that he's tiny, as he'll be big for a long time!

My little girl didnt gain for about a month after starting solids, and then again once she was on the move and then again once walking.
The important thing is he isnt loosing loads and isnt refusing food and isnt sickly with it in any other way. I have a sick child and i have had plunket tell me all sorts of rubbish, including she shouldnt be going to bed until 8pm and that its ok to add salt to her food (she has a heart condition!)

He looks a very well babe to me and good on you mum for making him that way
Keep up the good work if whatever your doing works for both of you

He is a boobie monster too and sometimes for my own convenience I just shove him on instead of making him something to eat or if I am disorganised at dinner time he ends up having booby first then not wanting his dinner cos it is too late and he is full of milk.

DDis 7mths, demand BF (so easily 6-8 feeds during the day) 3 meals but we're doing BLW so I can't exactly tell 'how much' she is actually eating. Sometimes she seems to eat alot, then other days she doesn't want of bar of it! I would think also at this age our babies are becoming alot more active so not gaining alot, or even losing a bit of weight.

Many PNurses are unfortunetly obsessed with babies weight gains which is silly. If he loves boobie more than solids at this stage I see no problem with it. And yes, Grrrrr at your PNurse!

ETA go the finger food! We have lots of fun with them here - not always consumed, but its all about taste & texture anyway!

Edited by Mamma2N

James is a porker but also had a drop around 8 months and has picked back up. He was very reluctant to get into solids and LOVES his boob......we are just starting to take off with solids now. One thing I am changing is his meal times. I am making them earlier as I think his last meal was too late and he was knackered. I would often give up half way through and think "I'll just give him boob" but then he would be full from solids and not interested. Now the plan is to feed him at 4.30 and then boob at 6.30. Fingers crossed it will work!

Try not to get too worried, I am sure he is not wasting away.

    Author: mumtooboys
Subject: 27487
Posted: 18 July 2009 at 12:09pm

Hi,

Solids have nowhere near as many calories as BM or formula see ; with DS2 the more solids he ate the less weight he gained..not that I could get Plunket to understand that! Solids are supposed to be about tastes and textures and milk is supposed to be their main source of nutrition into at least 9 months. Solids at this age are NOT about replacing milk feeds. I did an experiment and found that if I gave him MORE boob and less solids he gained heaps better; and when he didn't, he got longer and/or his head got bigger. Some babies are just small....wish people would stop worrying about how much kids weigh all the time, there are better ways to tell if they are growing than how much they weigh (or don't weigh as the case may be).

Has he been ill recently? BF babies tend to plateau in weight gain at around 4 months. My plunket nurse flipped out bc Alex had basically stayed the same one month and when I challenged her she hen proceeded to tell me he'd lost lost 50gm in a month....like 50gm is the end of the earth! They're not machines, they aren't gaining weight every week, let alone every day and the average bf baby "only" gains between 50-80gms a week from 6-12 months anyway. Watch Brennan not the scales; I stopped going to Plunket 6.5 months ago bc they just wouldn't get off my back about how much he didn't weigh....and funnily enough, in that time he's gained a whopping 4.9kg! Rant over.............

To answer your question, Alex had just started solids at 7 months, but even when he was only just on 3 meals at 10 months he was still being fed on demand and having as many as 6-8bf a day for as long as he wanted, usually about 10 minutes a side tops. He was having about 2tbsps max per meal at 10 months and when he first started he wasn't even having them everyday.

This talks about some of the calorie and fat content of common first foods, it's kind of scary actually. The only thing we found that "put weight on" him was avocado as it has more fat than even BM, but it's good fat.

Edited by mumtooboys

I know that was the case with Jack and they said it was normal.

Maybe limit his time at the boob to no more than say 20 minutes (total) and see if it makes a difference in his solid intake. After a week or two at 2 meals a day, he may even want three, some kids just crave it! But if you think he's filling himself up on milk then limit it a bit more for that morning/morning tea one and see if his lunch solids meal becomes more appealing to him.

He was only having one solid meal from 4mths and he eats about half a can at a time. He eats it, but he doesnt seem to enjoy it or hate it... just so so about it.

Anyway just been to get weighed again and hes lost weight. Plunket say try to get more solids into him, and i have been trying and hes now having 2 meals a day. Is part of the problem the fact that he loves his boobie and will happily feed in the mornings for 45mins and thats filling him up?

Sorry for the novel, i guess im just wondering how much your 7mth olds are eating (meal wise, and how much time at the breast?)

TIA :)
