I had surgery twice last year when Caleb was 12 months then 15 months old and continued BFing. The anaesthitist said very little got through to the breast milk and if I was concerned about the drugs then express and discard the milk for 12 hours only. Don't wait for the letter - it can take a while . Thanks so much for your help. It is ACC so I should be able to get some help. I'll give my case manager a call as soon as I get the letter saying who it is.

As for the BF thanks so much for letting me know that it will be okay to continue. I know he's nearly one but I really didn't want to force him to stop just because his mummy needs surgery. I'll try encourage him to take just the two feeds a day to make it easier on DH but I think we'll manage even if he want budge on his four feeds.

From talking to some LCs, they say BF mums are often advised by docs to stop BF but there is no reason you can't continue as planned. If you're going public, might be worth ringing the LC at the local hospital and talking about it, otherwise the Plunket Family Centres can probably advise (they often have an LC on staff).

Re help - get the surgeon to refer you to the social worker on the ward if going public. They should now the SW who covers the ward and they may be able to give you some quick info over the phone. A friend of mine had surgery while she was bfeeding (she posts on here so might see this) and from memory, her docs said it was fine, I know she kept feeding him thru it. I remember her saying that it's no different to having pain relief after a c-sect.

If the surgery is covered by ACC (ie. accident related), you should be able to get some home help. I think after having general anaesthetic you can feed pretty much straight away as only trace amounts of the anesthetic will be in your milk. If you want to be cautious maybe wait 24hours.

ACC might be able to fund home help for you, and can hire someone on your behalf

Okay I'm having surgery in about 8weeks and I have questions.
1) I"m Bfing four times a day at present. I think I should drop to morning and night to help DH after the surgery but how do I do this?
2) Can you feed after a general anestestic?
3) Does anyone know where I can get help to look after my son after the surgery? I want be able to walk for 8 weeks!
