I don't know if he was 100% ready then, but hey.

We've been doing some purees as well, either jarred stuff or yoghurt with some fruit puree mixed in. I load up the spoon for him, so he is always in control. And sometimes he only wants purees, for some reason. Mil did give pureed jar fruit flavours occasionally though. DD responded well to both but she was more than competent to feed herself and much preferred it over us feeding her and we can't even get a spoon near her since 9 months!

We used a plastic table cloth - just wipe it off.

I was told the best sign of them being ready is to star with them sitting upright on your lap while you are eating and if they are grabbing stuff off your plate and putting it in their mouth (or biting bits off) and chewing and then swallowing then they are ready.

If it is just a pinch I wouldn't worry too much as I do occasionally salt the water but only a pinch and nothing more. (teeny tiny pinch lol).

Umm 13 months here and still BFing, goal is to self wean, I am looking at 2 years atm... Have set myself goals the way through as my mum and gran couldn't BF past 3 months so my goals have been 3 months, 6 months, 12 months and now 2 years... Am going back to full time study next year (am currently studying full time but distance/at home) so hopefully that doesn't cause her to wean iygwim!

Basically DD eats exactly what we eat. I don't season her food with salt and pepper and if people want it we add it after. I do use herbs and spices though. The easy/great thing about BLW is you aren't making meals separately for them... They eat exactly what you do and it's a great way to get everyone eating healthier!

I second the steamer idea where you put your food at bottom salted and then hers on top unsalted. I did this in the start as I was doing a mix of mash and BLW and would often give her the mash to eat BLW style.

Also Baby Led Weaning is about weaning them onto solids not weaning them from Breast Milk/Formula...

We were still BFing at 6 months exclusively but Plunket had told us not to start before 6 months - have to wait until they are ready and that we weren't to start later than 6 months - go figure! I reckon we could have easily held off solids for another month! We even had a food strike at 10-11 months old and she had nothing but BM and was fine.
But like Mamat wrote, it's not a switch like Plunket make it out to be...

Anyway, let you baby guide you, honestly you'll 'know' when they are ready, if she's content with just milk wait until 6 months and then you can 'trial' something at say breakfast and see how she goes - if she's interested or not. Don't expect her to eat a whole lot - say a bite which may get spat out or just a lick... It's a start! Agree with what the saff wrote... You'll find at first it's more just play, I recommend getting the book as it has a good chapter on choking and gagging and the difference. DD has never choked but only gagged two or three times since starting 6 months ago.

As for drinks... DD had a sippy cup - one of the ones where you tip it like a bottle but she wasn't getting anything from it so at about 7-8 mo I got her a straw sippy cup and she loves water!
I think it's really important to offer water with meals to get them used to it etc rather than juice, milo etc. I don't drink water and find it really hard but when talking to my mum and grandma who fed me as a baby they never offered me water - just my bottles of milk!

Some babies are very ready by then and others not so much. You'll get an idea fairly quickly if it's too soon, but since with BLW food at the start is part of play and not actually necessary for nutrition then it's okay if they poke it in their ear or whatever. My girl was born at 33+6 and we started at 6 months (actual, not adjusted). I thought it might be too early for her being prem but she was well and truly ready and within a couple of months she was eating huge amounts.

Oh and I just went straight to a cup to drink from. Mostly because I was too confused about what sort of sippy cup to buy. I just made sure it was one with a smallish diameter so it's easier for her to get a lip seal on. We practiced in the bath a lot too.
You definitely want to chat about the principles with them though - and there is an information brochure online you can print off for them too. The biggest thing I had to emphasise though was that if she stops eating it means she's not hungry/interested so not to try and push her to eat more and not to use food as a reward/punishment. Otherwise they found it so easy that it was no problem to get them on board. If they look hesitant sit there and have lunch together so they can see how she does it whilst you're there.

It might help to give them some info to read on blw prior tho- cos its not likely they have looked after a blw baby. If u just tell them that baby doesnt eat puree but has solid food they will no doubt say- but he will choke! Giving them correct written info should help reduces their worries about it,...and seeing your DS in action shoud reassure them too! They are no more likely to choke than any other baby, cos they have learnt the skills of eating at their own pass/physical development, rather than being spoon fed puree to the back of their mouths and just swollwing, and then later learning the skills of getting the food to their own mouth and managing it in their mouth before swollowing.

The caregivermay expect him to eat more than he does too. He will probably be eating less in comparison with a baby having puree, where the caregiver can clearly see that he/she has fed baby x ammount from the jar, and it was all consumed,.. you have no idea how much of the food u give baby has actually been eaten- for a long time the pile of left over squashed up food I cleared up after DS had finsihed his meal looked as big as the ammount of food I had given him!
With blw there IS lots of mess, but its no different to the mess a toddler makes. I find that DS is a heck of a lot messier now at 13 months than he was at 8 months anyway,...so the carer will get used to the mess!

Big cooked chook bones (like leg bones) are actually really good for babies to chew on too... they get the flavouring and a little of the meat and seem to like it if they are teething. My youngest is quite into them now. (9months)
Apple: I was a bit nervous with T with apple too, but he is fine with it. i usually slice it and he has all his teeth bar his molars... I'd say that would have to be important for hard things like apple, been able to chew it properly.
Youngest has been quite slow to get into food but in the last month seems to have taken to it in a big way and mostly eats everything we do now... some stuff i will cook a bit more to make sure it is softer. Sushi last night was a success with him... not so the oldest, he prefers to just play with it!

Aidens very first taste of food at 5 1/2 months was persimon in the meshfeeder. I would also give him cold celery sticks to naw on when he was teething. BLW isn't about so much 'rules' but what works for you and your child. I was really stressed when the girls first started but so glad we did it now, because at 16 months they can handle pretty much anything. Cracks me up watching them eat things like nectarines and plums as E bites all the skin off and spits it out lol

I felt it was even more important to hold off on any solids until after 6months as his throat and stomach were obviously not 100% and adding something else in the mix could do more damage/be more uncomfortable (I have nothing to base that on though, just my instinct). He wasn't showing any signs of being ready for solids until just after 6months anyway so it was easy enough for me to wait. He still doesn't eat hardly anything now and we've been going with BLW for just over 2 months and although his reflux is pretty much non-existant now I think that is to do with my dietary changes rather than his eating habits.

Although I have heard from others that have found huge improvements in reflux symptoms after starting BLW.

ETA - his sleep may improve, it may not. Every baby is different. DS sleep hasn't changed at all, we are still being woken up fairly regularly for a BF. This would be likely though if he was being fed purees rather than BLW, so don't let that put you off.

Edited by MamaT

However, he is very spilly and we think he has mild reflux (not on any meds but he is very sicky and gets sicky burps). My DH is suggesting we start solids ASAP to try and help improve his reflux symptoms. My concern with BLW is that he could struggle with refluxy symptoms for a long time if he doesn't start actually ingesting any food for a long time after he starts BLW. A bit rambly but does anyone have any experience?

Also sleep related If I go down the BLW path is it likely that DS will not start sleeping for longer chunks at night until he is much older.

She can eat as much as me for lunch! Her ability to pick up peas and mince is so amazing to watch, and she certainly knows what she wants! She likes dry weetbix for breakfast (ugh), crushes it in her fists and then picks up bits lol, or just chomps on the whole thing. I was a bit skeptical at first as she just didn't seem to be getting much food, but now I'm pretty confident that if I offer her a variety and enough food, she'll get what she needs. She still has heaps of milk feeds - whenever she wants (or I think she wants heh), and still wakes heaps at night, not always for a feed, but definitely at least one feed a night and she's very nearly 9 months.

Food works for some babies but not all, unfortunately. I guess I've kinda switched to solids first. I used to make sure I BF DD before I had a meal, cos she'd eat with me. Now I still let her eat with me (and she has morning and afternoon tea often too), but I just BF her when she wants feeding, I don't worry about when that is in relation to solids really. She knows the difference between the two and I give her whichever one she is wanting (as best I can interpret anyway!).

We have been doing BLW for a few weeks now, but I must say he is still not eating a hell of a lot! Not really interested in solids at all. I guess my milk is too good :-) He was in a bit of a routine, but now I do give him an extra feed here and there if he is hungry. He is still gaining weight and happy enough, so I figure he will get there in the end.

Are any of your bubs still waking for a feed at night around this age? My son does almost every night. A lot of babies I know are sleeping through but they eat three meals a day (spoon fed). However he is hardly eating anything, and is already crawling (was at six months) so I figure he needs the extra nutrition.

Oh and another query, plunket says to go from milk before to milk after solids after 8 months. I assume you don't do that with BLW as such???

So don't worry if he's not getting heavier. There is a reason plunket goes at least 2 months between weights once they get older - they go through phases of growing plump, then long, then plump, then long, and they don't gain a whole lot of weight when growing long. Plus if he's been sick that won't have helped matters at all. But he looked pretty good to me - I don't think you'd have been able to tell by looking at our two bubs that mine chows through her solids and yours is happy with milk still. Take it as a compliment that your milk supply must be awesome for it to still be satisfying him so much!

You are doing great

Nic, triple her birthweight is awesome. I dont weigh him regularly tho, but mum weighed him the other day, which was 2 months since he was last weighed- at hes still travelling along the same line on the plunket graph.
There are way more nutrients and fat in bm that there is in baby rice and vege purees,.. so if u were giving him lots of puree he would likely be decresing milk feeds by now. More like and a little solids is better for him at this age than lots of baby food and less milk.

Lots of babies weight plataus too, they dont continuly gain at the same rate they did when younger. It probably has more to do with him being sick, that not eating lots of solids.
But you could always weigh him in another few weeks and if hes still not gained then reaccess.

He doesn't seem to actually ingest much, there is the occassional bit in his nappy but really only just small bits and pieces.
My worry is that he hasn't put on any weight in the past month. I weighed him at home (with high class scales) on the 21st July and he was 8.1kg, weighed him again yesterday and he is still 8.1kg, he is slowly dropping down on the Plunket graph.
He has just recently been sick with a cold and ear infection which lasted about 10days and during this time he wasn't at all interested in solids but was definately upping his milk feeds.

So anyway, I just want some reassurance that I am doing the right thing.

So have started today and she loves it.

She had some banana at breakfast, and some cereal. haven't been having lunch but she was grabbing for my vegemite sandwich so made one up for her and she loved it.

Will be going this way from now on. Is it meant to come out still looking like it was when it went in? This morning we had a nappy full of broccoli (strange child loved the stuff last night lol), and before that it was bits of carrot.

I'm a bit nervous, but getting over it, and am really enjoying how bubs can entertain herself with food for so long and have so much fun! She's got so much better so fast at picking stuff up. She sits in the highchair 'eating' while I prepare dinner and then is usually still going while we eat. I am just trying ot make sure I offer her a chance to try some food at least once a day, and not worrying too much about when.

So far we've tried broccoli, carrot, raw capcisum (interesting facials), avocado, banana, cruskets (definitely the favourite - possibly due to teething), a bread roll (a crunchy dinner roll while out - she gummed on it for ages, got a few funny looks), and has sucked on a piece of ham (probably a bit salty in hindsight) and a piece of beef.
