We have a golden lab and dark carpet in the living areas where he is allowed. We have black long haired cats and light carpets in the rest of the house and they leave nice clumps of fur there.

Before Jake I could deal with and vacummed on the weekends as I didnt care when I was at work. Now it drives me nuts and I vacuum daily.

Agree on the washing, although we do this every 3 months unless he gets mucky and brushing regularily. Dont ya just love it lol, we have 2 labs, 1 was banished out side when i was pregnant with tayla and my old boy who is 13 is inside he stays on his bed and at this stage has is own bedroom, we are soft lol,

Hi All

Well we got 3 dogs in our house, a Golden Retriever, a West highland White Terrier and a Pomeranian. We get a lot of dog hair too, I find it in some of the weirdest places I'm usually vacuuming 3-4 times a week.

Anyway, my best suggestion is daily grooming and bath them every 6 weeks. No more than every 6 weeks mind, otherwise you destroy all the natural oils in their coat.

Go get a good quality brush from a pet store and make good use of it.

We have a Dalmatian. She sheds year-round.
We've had professionals in here to clean the carpet and they can't get it all up.
We managed to keep hair out of the dining room by putting vinyl planking down. But the rest of the house is awash with it.
Our car is covered with it, even though she only goes in it once in a blue moon.
My Mum (who lives in AKL) calls me after every visit to say she found Phoebe's hair on her couch/bedroom/bathroom.
It follows us
Enough to drive you cuckoo, as you'd all appreciate.

The only suggestion I have if you can afford it take your dog along to 'Nose to Tail Dogwash' on Bush Rd in Albany and ask them to show you the Mars Comb. It is a fantastic way of getting rid of all the dead and lose hair, they cost alot though. If you can spare the time at least once or twice a month then you can go along there and bath your dog and use the comb at the same time. They also do it for you. Most dogs love it once they get used to being in a new place. I think it costs about $30 for self service.

I used to work there and the owner Kath and her daughter Alice are great with the dogs.

Oh thank you that looks awesome. I have a dyson and it comes with a head that has a little bit of that red stuff on it that I use on the sofas but that one looks a million times better. Might sneakily buy one this week whilst Dh isn't looking and give it a go.

One of our cats is a maine coon, so a lot like the norwegian forest cat and the other two are black domestic long hair, so lots and lots of hair

I think part of the issue with the curtains is that they are thermal lined with this stuff that almost feels rubbery/plasticky so it grips the hair and grease to it. I have the same problems with my cat he sheds everywhere he is a norwegian forest cat and loves sitting up at the windows.

A few years back i brought a special head for the lux it works great now i can't remeber the name of it but i will attempt to describe it for you. If you pick up your vacumn head and turn it over you will see two small strips of fabric its usually red but not always well my vaumn head has two very large panels of this its the same sort of fabric thats on lint brushes. I have a glove which is made of this as well so i use that to get rid of his hair on the curtain ( i must do that in our room).

I will do a search on the net and see if i can come up with a website for you.

Here a posting for it on trademe i find it great there and so does a work mate who has a german sheperad. Just be prepared as it does give you a wee bit of a workout.

Yep have a lint roller (well two actually as I had to buy another one so Spencer could help!) but it doesn't get rid of the other stuff, the hair leaves like a black oily mark. I find cat hair the worst. Our white dog leaves tufts of fluff all over our dark carpet, but the cat hair is much harder to pick up IMO.

 

I recently bought a new vacuum purely because the pet hair was driving me insane. I would get down on my hands and knees and spend over an hour vacuuming the house before. Now with the new vacuum I do it every 2nd day and it really seems to help.

cuppatea - I had the same problem with my cats years ago and I ended up getting one of those sticky roller things from the supermarket to get the hair off the curtains. It was a PITA to do but at least it got rid of the hair although there were always still faint marks from where the hair had been.

Sorry no suggestions for dog/cat hair on the carpet but for the chairs and curtains could you use one of those lint roller thingees with the sticky stuff? We've got one with disposable sticky paper (3M I think?) and when it's full you just tear it off and keep rolling. Odd this came up, I was gonna start one about my cat hair problem.

We have 3 cats (was 4 till recently ) and two dogs, the dogs are outside most of the time though and when in they sleep on their beds so they aren't the main issue.

Vacuuming I can deal with, although it does annoy me that I vacuum and then 10 mins later one of the cats has dropped more hair, they are all long haired and leave clumps of hair rather than shedding fine hair everywhere.
What is annoying me at the moment is the curtains, cos they sit on the window sill and in our window seat they leave hair on the backs of the curtains along with that oily stuff off their fur so I end up having to take the curtains down and wash them which is a bit extreme just for some cat hair but I don't know how else to clean it. I used to have the same problem before I bought my new vacuum cleaner. We have a golden lab and light colour carpet which masks the hair, but there was no way anyone could ever sit on the carpet without getting hair all over them! I bought a Hoover Hygiene with a power head and it is incredible! After doing the vacuuming there is no hair left at all and I always make sure that our dog sits on her mat when she is inside.

Ive got a huntaway golden retriever cross, huntaway colouring and retriver hair and man when i was pregnant it absolutley drove me insane!!! she was only inside sometimes and was only on her mat and spent most of her time outside (been like that since we got her at 8 weeks old! i know mean mummy) but i couldn't cope with the hair (before i was preg it never really bothered me i just vacumed it up (which was a mission) and that was that) but yea couldn't cope so she is now and has been for over a year an outside dog but hair still manages to make it's way inside lol so sorry no remedys just alot of sympathy lol
she does come inside for a special treat now and then but man do i pay for it hahaha we just spend lots of time outside with her now lol and R LOVES her

I've got 2 Jack Russells and their hair gets everywhere! The best thing we did was buy a Miele Cat and Dog vacuum cleaner. Yes, more expensive then most cleaners but OMG it picks up everything. The first time we used it we filled the bag twice. Now much less on our clothes, our furniture is clean and the carpet is largely hair free. It's brilliant. My only solution was to let my boy sleep on a blanket in a room with lino overnight - kitchen or bathroom or laundry. I could run a mop over the area in the morning and it was clean again. I have the same prob and it truely drives me insane!! except we have a golden retriever and dark coloured carpet... I can't even look at it it's so frustrating and once I start vacumming it seems to look even worse sometimes... It takes forever to get it all and I need to vacuum daily or gets soooo thick.... So I'm really no help I just wanted to moan about it

Basil sheds all the time, all year round. I constantly feel like I am going to go insane with the dog hair on my carpet. I have a black lab and very light carpet and the dog hair just sticks to it and no matter how much I vacuum it is never completely gone (I dont get to vacuum a lot as DD hates it!) I have a special head on the vacuum but I swear it makes no difference. Poor DD always has dog hair stuck to her.

Just wondering if anyone has any magical solution for me LOL! oh and I would love to make Diesel an outside dog but he is actually only inside at night and I could not make him stay outside all the time, I'm too soft!
