It's just all about the spin

Also it would be good to think of some questions you want to ask them - it's better to have a few things so that it's not a one sided interview.

Probably they will ask you some questions like:
What was a challenge you encountered at work and how did you deal with it?

What do you perceive as a weakness that you have?

ETA: Oh and if at all possible try to avoid talking $$ until you have the job. But just in case they do ask you what you want to earn it would pay to go and do some research
http://www.hays.net.nz/main/default.aspx
is a great place to check on the salary range for your position. They publish a survey every year. Always helped me negotiate my pay rises

Good luck!

Edited by Bobbie

I think they are pretty key. I always address the aspects of the job description in my cover letter, so it looks like it is relevant and thought out and not just a standard application letter.

I recommend finding out everything you can about the company, and then show them you have done your research in the interview. This shows a genuine interest as well as that you are proactive and a hard worker. During your interview, you will get a chance to express how much you want the job - make sure you tell them why YOU would be perfect for the job, not why the job would be perfect for you.

Also, always have some questions that you can ask about the position, again it shows interest. And perpare for "tell me about a time where" questions, as it seems a lot of smaller companies use these a lot.

Sorry if I am telling you how to suck eggs.... I really hope you get the job. I know exactly what it's like to desperately want a particular position.

Let us know how you get on. Hugs!

Then its up to you to sell yourself in the interview. If you do get an interview a quick email the day after the interview to say you were pleased to have the opportunity to meet and are excited about the role is good, but not phone calls.

Another thing is to tell them what you can offer them not why the job would be perfect for you. It's amazing how many people say I'm just looking for a job or its convenient for me because of the hours/location/whatever.

GOOD LUCK with it though.

I think I over tried for the one I wanted & was more relaxed & did not mind if I got the other one, which I did.

I think it is important to do your research, find out about the company, & prepare your answers. Have a plan of what you can offer & what you want out of it. Go in positive, don't over agree, show them that you can think for yourself. At the end you could say something along the lines of this is my ideal job, & I could see myself fitting in very well & being an asset, blah blah.

I would not say I would work for less as that say "desperate" not necessary "right person".
They will have an amount they can spend on wages for the position & in a lot of companies if they don't use that amount then it is taken off their budget.

FX you get an interview & the job

I have been in this situation before but through an agency so I felt like I could be pretty pushy and called them the day before and the cut off day to see if they had any news.

If it is direct through the employer I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that as I have been in the position of recruiting staff before and didn't appreciate pushiness as this could mean that the person was going to be "high maintenance" in the role. The application itself is the best way of standing out, but if you really want to do something extra you could maybe send a polite email as a followup saying how much the job interests you and that you are looking forward to hearing from them (perhaps under the guise of "just checking your received my application").

Good Luck!!
