Thanks SO much for thinking of us!

To be honest, things really aren't going well. We had some improvement for a week or so when we came off the tube, but for some reason we went the other way again.

At the moment we are working hard to get about 500ml per day into Jackson... by working hard I mean we just have to have bottle/sippy cup available constantly and he snacks on it only. Drinks about 40ml at a time - it's terribly frustrating! I don't know why he's changed... he used to do 120 - 150ml at a time, with a 200ml feed in the morning. We've tried not letting him snack but it doesn't work.

As for solids, he still won't open his mouth for the spoon so we give him finger food, which he chews and spits out. We still have a terrible problem with his gag reflex... not sure if it is because he has never had enough practice, or there really is a problem. But every time he has a gag/vomit he is put off swallowing for several more days. Tonight it was a pea... one pea... that he tried to swallow with disastrous effect. Immediately he stopped trying to swallow. It's so frustrating! I am actually going to just do a post shortly about that. I just don't know what to do.

At the moment, Jackson is holding his weight. He's lost heaps (about 700g) but for the last few weeks he's stayed static. So, all the extra calories being added to the milk is doing something, thankfully. But, he needs to pick up on the food to start gaining, which is not happening at the moment. :-( He's eating even less at Day Care too... we had hoped that seeing lots of kids eating would help. The carers find him very, very perplexing.

The most annoying thing is that we just can't keep him well. I don't know if it's poor nutrition, or just being a baby in winter, but he's been constantly sick for months. He's had a rattly cough for about 8 weeks. And then there is the teething too - he's cutting his two upper molars and his two second front teeth. And I am sure some bottom ones must be coming too. None of this helps. It makes it incredibly hard. He's just started day care, and at the end of the first week he's woken up with a temperature... today it spiked at 39.7 degrees! (I was very freaked out!).

There's lots more I could tell you! We're being coached by email by the directing professor at Graz (the Austrian tube weaning clinic featured on 20/20), and she's given some amazing support, but we still haven't cracked Jackson's code. I wish I had $40k to travel there. The specialist help would be amazing.

The threat of the tube going back in looms very large. I am having a rough time and feel sick in my stomach any time I think too hard about things. I cry a lot!! Going back to work has helped somewhat - I miss Jackson like crazy, but we did need a break from each other and I needed a break from the relentless worrying.

So, that's the short version! I continue to have hope that things will improve soon, but sometimes it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Just thought I would report back with some good news, so everyone doesn't think I am negative ALL the time.

Jackson drank 735ml yesterday, ate 1cm of cheese and tried a little food off my spoon. This is HUGE. He hasn't willingly and happily drank that volume since May.

I feel energised by this.

As Murphy would have it, Jackson has woken up clogged and with a temperature of 38.3. Sigh. Just need to ride this out and stay cool. He still started his day with a 200ml bottle. Ten days ago I could *barely* get 50ml into him. Progress is slow, but it is sure.

I have also enrolled in the Graz Tube Weaning email support programme. This is email coaching from THE world-renowned expert, and she is going to answer MY questions and help ME. It's expensive, but she's weaned hundreds of babies, both at Graz and via email. If you'd have told me 6 months ago that I'd have to find someone on the opposite side of the world to help us through this, I would've said you were crazy. But here we are.

Also, yesterday I skyped with a mum from Chicago for an hour. Her little boy turned 1 yesterday and his and Jackson's stories are identical. It's very surreal - it is like we've had the exact same experience for the last year. Freaky. The only difference is that this boy has graduated from the tube weaning programme and eats. Properly. And he's growing, all by himself.

I am starting to believe this is possible.

I know we all say that but have no idea what you are going through. I can't imagine how hard this is for you guys but you are doing as much as you possibly can.

I get so frustrated when Joel only eats what I think is a little bit....you would probably be thrilled if Jackson ate that lol (tonights dinner was a yogurt and thats it) but at least I know he will take a bottle.

We had feeding issues with Leah as well but nothing like what you have had.

I wish we lived closer so that we could come and help you guys , but I guess we have to support you this way instead.

Oh Laurie, it is so sad to read your latest post. I don't know what to say but a break sounds like a good idea.

It is no wonder you are near breaking point, you obviously want the best for Jackson & that of course, involves eating & drinking.

I am not coping well. I want to give up, but on every level.

Jackson's eating has got worse every day for the last four days. We peaked at 555ml, and today we haven't yet made 200ml.

His skin is already starting to look loose on him, he's lost 400g in the last week and I am at the end of my teether. I have tried so hard to keep it together but this is taking a real toll on me. I don't know what to do. Emma has never been a big eater and we've tried all sorts of things to get her eating.
I find distraction worked a treat when she was younger. I'd strap her in her high chair, give her one of 6-7 toys I kept aside for the occasion - a shape sorter was her fave. While she was busy playing, I'd feed her quickly - she did eat OK from a spoon though.
Another thing that worked was being somewhere different ie McDonalnds - she'd be so busy looking around that she'd eat anything - I used to get myself a latte and feed her baby food we'd brought from home
Keep trying different things too - you never know what they'd like. Emma hates fruit (we are yet to discover one she'll eat) but likes baked fries (the frozen ones), home baked chicken nuggets, potato chips, salami sliced thinly and grated cheese (but won't touch sliced ).

Hope it all improves for you. It sounds very much like the start of solids that we are going through (but you expect it in a 6 month old). Maybe try and pretend Jackson is just starting solids for the first time.

I agree with stacey about dumpin it all on the tray. We did that with Tom (mainly cos I would get annoyed at him trying to take the bowl off me and tip it himself) Plunket also recommended doing that for James as he is hardly interested. Fliss, we've seen a psych and a SLT but, believe it or not, we're not considered bad enough for the "feeding team" that all work together. So, it means that everyone we see is working independently, which can be frustrating. Our SLT was the best person we had, unfortunately we're about to be victim to the SLT shortage as she is leaving and not being replaced.

dont be discouraged.... it hasnt been that long without the tube. you have to give him, his body and yourself all a chance!

Baby food doesn't take that interesting so its not surprised hes not excited about it. Daniel became a horrid feeder (not quite to Jacksons extent) and never got excited about food either until he really got the hang of it and we could get more adventurous with foods and tastes

I did all sorts to make it more fun for him. Laurie, you've probably been down this route already but is there a child psych in the child development service? I'm not sure how CCDHB is structured but in Waitemata, I'm pretty sure there is a child feeding service with dietician, SLT and psych and they are all trained, skilled, experienced (etc) in kids with behavioural feeding issues and *should* be able to help you with some of those difficulties (like transferring food back in the mouth). Stacey, yeah, we do lots of messy play. He does lick his fingers, but you never see him get excited about what he tasted. He just doesn't seem to enjoy any food, even treats, and I am not sure what to do about it. :(

Sally Belly, yes we've checked his swallow. It was before he ever had solids, but there didn't seem to be any problems. oh i didnt mean to spoon feed it to him... i am all for finger food or letting them help themselves... stacey's idea of tipping a jar of baby food on his tray is a good one too... and maybe give him a spoon too to play with and practise with as well, you never know he might accidentally put food in his mouth! LOL!

and him learning to push the food to the back of the mouth is all learning... the more he eats and practises the better he will get at it... (that is why speech is linked to eating).

Laurie I have just discovered that Sophia loves scrambled eggs, if you don't stir them heaps they are kinda lumpy, I put some of the 'lumps' on her tray to pick up and she likes that. If you haven't tried that you could, they really don't need any chewing. Otherwise make omelette and cut that up.

Have you tried getting a jar of food that he used to eat/semi like and just tipping it out on the high chair tray and leaving him to it? That was how we got Daniel interested in food, he would suck on his fingers which had apple or pear etc all over them. He loved just making a big mess, but the point was some went down

Thanks. Jackson won't open his mouth for any food I offer, so anything mashed or pureed is out of the question. He's gone backward SO much since the tube in that respect.

We're offering JUST finger food to him, but he will only put it in his mouth if it is miniscule. So, it takes him half an hour to eat 10 kernals of corn. I just don't know how we'll get to a stage where he is eating enough to survive (and eating enough to get rid of the much hated bottle).

He still is tremendously gaggy, and doesn't move the food to the back of the mouth to swallow. Any tips for overcoming this? thanks, dont know when the last time i was called sensible was!

i think it is just that feeding babies is something i am passionate about, giving them the chance to explore food and go at their own pace. and it is something that so many mothers have problems with too. probably why i found baby-led weaning so great.

please please hang in there.... he probably wont eat much to start with, it will take a while for his body to realise he isnt getting the sustenance the way he used to... and there are are lots of kids his age out there who just arent big eaters anyway... i'm pretty sure that at that age emmas twins still ate bugger all! and now!!!

its hard not to worry but try..and if he doesnt want to eat just let him play with his food anyway. it will all help in the end.

he will lose weight! just like a newborn... so no point in getting upset when he does lose it and it wont be a step backwards! He will be fine, and so long as you try and not show how worried and stressed you are about it to him he wont pick up on it and it WILL come right in the end.

NikkiB, have you become a member of the Tube Fed Kids forum? I have met the most amazing, supportive bunch of women who completely understand what I am going through. I might be falling apart right now if it weren't for them.

The focus is getting the kids off the tubes, but there are a number of women still tube feeding as well.

Oh my god I am sh*tting myself!

Jackson pulled his tube today, so we decided to start early with the weaning and not replace it.

At the same time, the paediatricians have told me to stop concentrating his formula, and stop adding extra calories with the additive we've been using.

I feel like all our safety nets have been removed at once! His weight is going to plummet, but hopefully his body will start to realise that he needs to eat. That's the theory, but will it work?

I am so, so scared that he won't eat. Terrified doesn't even come close to describing how I feel.

I need everyone's thoughts/prayers/wishes - you name it I'll take it. It's going to be a rocky few days.... weeks?... until we know which way things are going to go.
