Tehe, I had to giggle at the thought of what Catriona would pick!

Keira just had a 4th birthday but the things she really loved were, my littlest pony sets, strawberry shortcake doll, and simple board games, trouble...etc.

Another really big hit with her is anything crafty. I'll throw in the idea of buying anything with their name on it.

The best present I ever got for the two five year olds in my life was a 'personalised plate.' My friend is a potter and his daughter makes cute creations on large size saucers and paints the kiddo's name on on it. My partner's daughter refuses to eat from anything elso.

But places like nature's window have drink bottles with the kid's name on it.

yeah i was going to say beados - Paris got given a neat little travel pack one and seriously it's really neat, and the little tweezers that come with it are farrrr better than the annoying big pens you get with teh starter sets (they just drop all the beads where you don't want them to go!!)

Same again with the others, dress-up dolls, hair ties, nail polish if she's allowed that kinda thing, little note pads and gel pens (they love writing little secrets), a little purse, some jewellery (equip, diva etc all have ranges made for little girls with cute stuff on them and usually have sales with stuff for like $3 - $5) failing that pumpkin patch quite often have nice headbands or little jewellery stuff too.

Barbies, or barbie petities range are very popular. the little tiny "my little ponies" are great, my girls are very into those. Paris also loves anything board game-ish...last xmas she got a few boardgames and they went down well.      

Failing that, beads always go down well too, we recently went into an "uncle bills" shop (dunno if everywhere has those) and got heaps of different packets of beads for $1 or 50cents a pack, got a packet of string stuff, and a packet of clasps, plus a little craft compartmented container. Cost less than $20 to set up a huge huge bead collection and my girls love sitting down making all sorts of bracelets and jewellery.

Alia & her friends are into colouring in books. You can get these really cheaply. Ones with stickers EVEN BETTER

Hannah montana, but a little bit more exxie...

Strangely lego is the rage as well, but again not that cheap.

They are also into skipping ropes & hopscotch.

Cutting out & pasting for crafty kids.

Catriona is only coming up for 11 months old so i wont get a very sensible answer if i ask her She is just very popular with the older kids at daycare

i like the idea of fairy wings

didn't know My little ponies still existed! i remember begging and begging for one for my 9th birthday back in '85!

glad to hear spending 10-15 dollar is ok

Edited again: Memories are flooding back! I didn't get a My Little Pony cos my mum was very anti what she called 'plastic rubbish'. But i got enough birthday money to go and buy one myself. Ha ha

Maybe you should take Catriona into the Warehouse, into the "my little ponies"/aka "little girls" aisle and let her pick something that she thinks her friend will like! Anything dress up, Fairy wings, Jewelery or jewelery making kits so they can make their own (these usually will go down a treat), as MrsH23 said my little ponies are always loved, also pollypockets, and all those little dolls. I am out of touch with these things - what is a good pressie for a five year old girl - don't want to spend much more than $20 if i can help it (or are you expected to spend much more than that at birthday parties these days??)
