Just base the time you keep it for on the first lot of milk you expressed IYKWIM.

Author: busyissy
Subject: 28330
Posted: 25 August 2009 at 8:46pm

You should be fine to freeze EBM that has been in fridge for 3-4 hours and even longer. My milk would last for 12hrs in the fridge but some women's lasts longer. It has a shelf life of 6mths once frozen.

Basically you have it right, express after each feed and freeze what you get off and within a few days you will have enough for a full feed if not a couple of them. At 3wks bubs will probably only be taking around 150mls anyway so your frozen supply will build up quite quickly.

One tip, when I was expressing and freezing for my son I found that the EMB had to be defrosted right at the time of use. Defrosting over a period of time even in the fridge meant that it went off. You defrost by placing the milk into a jug of boiled water, never use the microwave as you will kill the milk.
