Was good to have something snug for the first few months going into winter and was easy to air the mattress and change the linen frequently (spilly baby).
Even though she was a big (9lber) baby she was in it comfortably for about 4 months. We never bothered with a stand and just had her right up against our bed at night on chairs.
I loved it because it was so portable and its always handy when they are little being able to move it all around the house. Definitely strong enough to carry with the baby inside.

I think having a mattress protector was also pretty handy when they were little as they were constantly wetting through their sheets, with sick up, dribble or through their nappies.

I think the benefit of a bassinet of some sort is they are portable which is handy if you want to keep baby nearby all day long. And for us there was no way we could fit a full size right next to our bed. I do think they seem so much cozier for the baby too.

She also has lots of great linen for them and cots etc.

I did have a stand but didnt use it as his room was too small. I just sat the basket in the cot. It was definitely fine to carry into the living room etc though.

Nice and portable.

We have a Ezee Rocker bassinet (also known as Cariboo). This is a calico fabric bassinet on a wooden stand. The bassinet itself can also be clipped into a cot which was really handy for transitioning into the cot. DS was in it until he was about 5 months.

We just have the standard foam mattress that comes with it, but I imagine you could get a woolen mattress to fit if you wanted. Just make sure the measurements work out as it needs to be a snug fit. We used a Dr Sprotts cover from birth, and there is now one on his cot. I have a new one to use for this baby. It's personal preference on those really.

For going out, we have the Phil & Teds cocoon which we used in the evenings a fair bit when DS came out with us.

Happy shopping! xx

Edited by potato

    Author: britgirl2009
Subject: 28619
Posted: 08 September 2009 at 11:10am

Hi

I have just been looking into buying a Moses basket/Bassinet until baby is big enough for a cot and wondered what the main differences were between the two. Moses baskets seem to be made from natural fibres which come with a wooden stand so it can be kept next to the bed. My worry with this is that the basket looks quite flimsy sitting on the stand and I am concerned it would wobble or tip over. Also, are the baskets strong enough to carry baby in them if you walking from room to room?

I like the idea of the natural fibre basket and wool mattress but wondered if a bassinet would give more support/stability? It would be good to know what to look for in a good bassinet, e.g. quality makes, types of mattress to avoid for SIDs, is it necessary to get a mattress protector?

Can’t think of anything else right now but look forward to hearing from you guys with your thoughts on this one.
