I do have a tin with expandable sides, which I always use, but couldn't find it the other night when i was baking!  Don't know where I put it after I used it last.

 

Yeah you can always get the knife around the sides, but not under it.

 

I did have baking paper too, but in the past when I've used it for cakes, the cake seems to like sticking to that too.  I thought the non-stick cake tin, and greasing it would've been enough!

I alway use at least baking paper on the bottom of the cake. I cant do without my cake tin with its expandable sides. I still use cooking paper too as I am to lazy to clean properly.

i use baking paper in my tins now so
1) i dont have to clean them
2) they lift right out

That's what freaks me out about baking a cake, I always get cake-paranoia that it isn't going to come out of the tin. I'd used a non-stick tin, and still greased it and the damn thing was still stuck in there.  So I put it over heat, then turned it upside and was banging on the bottom, and it still wasn't coming out.  But half of it broke off, so I used a fish slice to get the rest out.  Was a little broken but iced it all back together.

I'd run a wet knife around the edges of the cake and then flip it onto a cooling rack and bang the bottom a few times with a wooden spoon. Chances are you'll need to do some cover work with the icing when it comes out though.
