I'm not sure if it's different for babies but the guide we always used for occupational noise hazards was, if you have to raise your voice to be heard at a distance of 1m, it's loud enough to damage your hearing. So if you can stand 1m away from DH in the room and talk at a normal volume and he can hear you ok, it should be fine. Kyle had the vacuum parked next to his cot for a while, that was pretty loud. I know the Sleep Store website recommends turning the music up as required even to the point where it is louder than the babies cry so I'm guessing that if it works for him then it is fine. We put DS to bed listening to brahm's lullaby every sleep.  He'll lie there quietly listening to the music on my PMD until he drifts off but he'll cry if the volume is too low and I have to turn it right up.  DH is concerned that the volume is too high and could be damaging and that we should just leave him to cry but I'd rather he didn't cry and turning it up solves that problem (plus his scream is louder than my PMD at max level).  The volume is loud enough that I can easily hear it in any room upstairs but can't hear it downstairs at all except through the baby monitor.

So how loud is too loud?
