But if things like hip displasia runs in both breeds then it may not get eliminated. Also depends on what breed it mostly takes after.

With the sizes of females and males, I believe it is smaller dogs where they breed the males a bit smaller than the females, not sure if they do it in big dogs or not.

I only know this because grandparents used to breed dogs and we've only ever had purebred dogs.

I second summerlamb on the whole be careful buying on trademe, there was a thing on fairgo and closeup about people who got ripped off over buying animals.

Just offering what I know, you don't have to take note!

    Author: AandCsmum
Subject: 29325
Posted: 14 October 2009 at 5:32pm

Amber, puppy's feet do not have any significance on the size they will get.

I have bullmastiffs & depending on what breed lines they come from absolutely rate them for kids. I would imagine it is the same as the DDB.

My suggestion is to visit the parents, see what they are like temperament wise. Remember that they can & more than likely will be a big dog. If you see any timidness or agression other than normal guard dog agression I'd give them a wide berth. Also see if you can meet any of the prior puppies.

Nicole, not all mixes are healthy. If you mix a dog like a DDB with a BM as the pups that Amber is looking at. They might both still have hip displasia or what ever & with genetics there is a high chance those pups will still end up with the same problems. Also not sure what you mean by breeding the males smaller than the females. None that I have seen have been this way.

Also I've heard that a purebred DDB is around 2.5k!!! But I guess in that the breeder will have researched their pedigrees & know what is lurking behind health wise, they will have also more than likely hip scored them to see if they have bad hips. But also bear in mind that HD is also somewhat cause by the environment.

With a DDB & a DDB Cross they are big dogs & their bones & joints are quite soft for the growth they go through & the weight they will gain. It is definitely recommended not to take them for huge walks & mainly let them self exercise until around 12 to 18 months.

& I must say OMG they eat a huge amount in the first year! Plus also be aware that as a big dog all vet bills are BIG.

Oh my suggestion is to go to the dogsonline website & look at the dogs on the australian site. Look at their website & they should have breed issues on there.

You can find breeders on the NZ Kennel Club website.

I used them when I got my Chihuahua, spoke to a few breeders and eventually got an older Chihuahua (3yrs) for $600 as opposed to $1200 for a puppy!!

GL!!

Definitely talk to your vet, if nothing else they will tell you which breeders not to buy from, do not buy one from a pet shop, unless you want a puppy with behavioural issues.

Dogs can get bloat from being exercised after eating, not sure if that is what is meant by twisted stomach. Dogs breeds with hip dysplasia you are often advised not to exercise too much when they are pups, and in some cases to not even allow them to climb stairs etc so that is all something to think about too.

The only other thing I would suggest is that if you do get one you attend puppy/dog training (again talk to vets to get a recommendation) cos you want to make sure you have a dog that size under total control
