Wait - you may not need one. Andthen it is a big waste of money.

By all means do your research now, but don't buy yet.

The best one for you will depend on:
how often you use it, once a week, every day, or every feed.
where you find it easiest to express
whether you will need to express away from home
how good your supply is
whether bubs will drink from a bottle
what is most comfy
the type of bottles you have (widfe mouthed or narrow necked)

We rented one on our way home from hospital with DD as I was struggling with b/f so wanted it there "just in case". We rented it from Baby Factory for $30 per week with a $100 bond which we got back when we returned it.

It was a godsend in the end and I am so glad I had it there! I expressed after every feed for 2 weeks and had a freezer full of milk for the future which came in very handy! I have the Avent IQ Electric pump and love it. It also came with a manual handle so I can do both electric and manual.

I bought it when it was on sale while I was pg. I was given one to use by the NICU whilst DD was in there, once we left the hospital i just hired one from the pharmacy.

This is the one i had, same as the hospital one

Jax may not be the same everywhere but last time I was in hospital they gave me a pamphlet on where I could rent Medela pumps so that could be an option too.

I have an Avent Isis and used it to express for night feeds so that DH could do one feed a day. It was lovely having just a bit of extra time out.

Also I had flat nipples and was using shields for the BFs and had no probs with the pump. In fact my MW said that pumping once a day was helping keep my milk up.

I have an electric one, the Medela Swing, and Isabella is 8 weeks today and I havent even used it yet, but I liked knowing it was there if i needed it.

I've gotten one too. I can always sell it on trademe if it doesn't work out for me. I am planning to BF in the beginning to get it established but I want DH to bond as well. And I won't be someone that could BF in public and I dispise public BF rooms, I'm a bit of a germaphobe. I had a really old school cylinder one with my daughter (11) and my son (8). I have just been given the Avent Isis which was recomended by a few friends that are bf.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for the advice!

mybeautiful3 - I'm wanting one mainly so that DH has the chance to feed as well as other family members where possible. I fully intend to BF from the start, but would like DH to bond as well.
I'm thinking I'll just get one before the birth as I think I'll use it quite often. And if for some reason I use it only a couple of times then I can sell it to a close friend or something.

Hi Jax - is there a specific reason why you feel you need one? I would encourage you to place baby on the breast as soon as possible after birth - babies are at their most alert state for about 1 hr after birth - so this would really get you off to a great start. There-after, skin-to-skin contact as much as you can, is also another suggeston you may want to consider.
Unlimited time at the breast, together with a good latch & positioning - will all help with establishing a good supply as well. I know the hospital I work at sells a medela double pump. And its cheaper than from the shops. I bought mine before she came but then I knew I wanted one lol and I was determined I was going to use it! I have the avent Isis IQ uno and love it, it has the attachment for the manual and you can also have it electric and control it to your speed rather then going at the machines speed.

Depending where you birth depends on if you can rent them but generally speaking you can if you feel you need one once bubs is born or need to to help establish supply etc. Might be an idea before buying to see if you can actually pump? They are only $30 a week I think.  Then if you want you can buy one I used mine on day 5 as mw wanted me to pump to have a bottle feed for DD as she had lost too much of her birthweight

I would say wait.. after all they are everywhere! Kmart, baby shops, chemists... if you need one it wont take long for someone to duck out and get you one.

I have an avent hand pump and it works well for me, takes me about 20 mins to express 80-140ml (I express before bed and dont always get the same amount). and thats with a settled supply. I held off buying one when pregnant incase it wasnt needed or incase I couldnt BF. However, the night we got home I ordered one of trade me as I thought screw having to do this for a year!!! However I ended up borrowing one from the hospital as I ended up having BF'ing issues. I will also say that I hate expressing now, it takes me ages to just get 50mils...And I LOVE BF'ing! I got the Medela swing pump & found it really good. I bought it from Birthcare-apparently they have really good prices on medela stuff.

I'd advise waiting till bubs is born first though. Get breastfeeding established & then if you feel you need the pump get one. I have a gf who swears by manual pumping (by hand). Perhaps see if your midwife has one you can borrow?

My midwife gave me one to borrow (a real old school hand one but did the trick) a few days after we got home. I then went on to buy the avent hand pump which works well for us (I just use it if DH does night feeds).

Medela is supposed to be good. I say supposed to because my experience didn't quite gel with the hype. LOL

I had an Avent Isis hand pump from when I had DS1 6 years ago............when he was a baby I couldn't pump to save my life. It went in a box, came half way round the world with us when we moved here from the UK and came out again when DS2 was born when DS1 was 4. Pumping so not an issue this time. hehehehehehehe

Long story short, I was expressing using my hand pump in anticipation of going back to work. Though it worked really well we thought I'd get on better with an electric pump because I was going to be pumping at work at least once a day and it would be 'quicker'. So we invested in a Medela Swing, which had fabulous reviews and it was a nightmare. By nightmare I mean that I got MORE milk in LESS time with my hand pump than I ever did with the expensive electric pump.

I also agree with a PP, just because you can't pump milk doesn't mean that you can't be successful at bf. I am in same situation, can't offer advice but my MIL who used one waited until after baby was born (last kid was born a few years ago) to get one and she recommended I do the same. I was never very successful using a breastpump although had no trouble bfing at all. The few times I tried I was more successful hand expressing. I suppose it depends on how often you intend to express.

I was intending to leave buying a breast pump until I know for sure I can successfully BF, however now I'm thinking once the baby has come along I will want one right there and then and don't want to bother going and buying one.

Can anyone recommend what I should do based on their experiences? SHould I hold off or just bite the bullet and buy one.
