You Guys have really goo dideas! We went to visit Birthcare Parnell in Auckland the other day and they supply towels and a pack of huggies disposable nappies for baby, and a pack of budget maternity pads. All linen was provided and as far as i can remember shampoo and stuff for baby was not supplied. I could be wrong.

I have in my bags:
BABY:
Muslin for wrapping
Nappies just in case although Birthcare provides
Wipes (Birthcare does not supply these!)
Face cloths,
Singlets,
All in ones
Jackets
Trousers
Booties - need more
Hats - still to get
Socks
Mini Tri Pillow in case i want it for feeding

ME:
Socks,
Undies
PJ's with loose tops or button tops
Track pants for comfort
Loose t-shirts
Maternity Pads in case needed
Breast pads - 1 box
Toiletries

That's all i can remember off the top of my head mind you.

When I had Andrew (this is 2 years ago now) at the Palmy hospital they provided:

  • Cloth Nappies
  • Clothes for baby (size "0") so quite big, but they cleaned the messes up
  • Nighties for mum - godsend I loved them so much, with little breast feeding holes already in them.
  • Pads (10 pack of Maternity size), I was luck and got 2 packs
  • All linen for baby and mum including towels and face cloths
  • In the shower they had the "generic" hand/body wash to use as well
  • Baby wash for babies for babies first bath (top to toe)

When we had to put Andrew on the bili-bed they provided the disposible nappies as thats all they were allowed to wear on them. Also in the Palmy hopsital it was one shower and toilet between 2 woman unless you were lucky enough to get one of the end rooms where it was just yours. 

Andie, in the ward in Palmy, they can adjust the temp in your room to your liking as they are controled by each roomnot by the whole ward. I had my room like a freezer while I was pregnant and in the ward as I was just so hot - due to still being pregnant. The hospital midwifes kept changing the temp in my room and then I would get angry and go "hello still an incubator I need it cold" they soon got the point.

I dont know about every hospital but when I was there last week having Addy (hehe its very strange saying that)they provided disposable nappies, wipes and some baby shampoo. We didnt need cotton buds and there was a wee pack of 2 nursing pads. I'm liking the list, Toni... liking it.  Here's mine - feel free to comment from your experience, peoples, if there's things I've left out or just really won't need.  Feel free to pilfer the list too if anyone is as anal-retentive as me about these things like lists and packing!  He he. 

Pack for hospital/birth:

11 dark cotton undies

3 nursing bras

3 pr jammie-jims with buttoned tops

slippers & socks

gigantic short nightie to labour in, and socks (mmm, sexy look!)

dressing gown

clothes to leave in (Lord knows what I'll fit by then... no idea!)

disposable breast pads

2 packs maternity sanitary pads

nipple cream

2 hotties

toiletries, lip balm and makeup (for feeling human again when going home)

disposable camera (in case we forget the digital one)

2 magazines & some CD's, & a pen

water bottle

sweets for labour

meusli bars for later

announcement contact list (for hubby to do all the ringing around!)

plastic bags for dirty laundry

in hospital you get the bounty pack which is more for baby. they have some really cool stuff in there now, heaps of wee samples of nappies and nappy rash creams etc plus a free magazine and lots of brochures. I'm wondering the same now... I got some of those tiny toothpastes from Pak n Save about a month back! Brilliant idea huh!? And it's nice toothpaste too

Also from Pak n Save, they're selling Palmolives Naturals shampoos in a 100ml size for a buck or so each which is a really nice size for your toilet bag (if you can't get free samples from anywhere).

Travel size baby wipes (can also get samples!) and to ring ALL of the nappy companies to get a free newborn sample!
We used the hospital's cloth nappies until we went home - saved using our nappies and they did the washing!!

Ooh! I went to the $2 shop and they sold these miniture empty bottles in packs of three. I bought these as they are the perfect size for putting your shampoo, conditioner and body wash in! They are also reusable which is a bonus, now my toiletry bag isn't bulging.

Also, foodtown has bags of Werther's Original on special for $2.00 which are perfect for sucking on during labour! Especially when you start feeling a bit sick which I did with Maddisyn.

I know we have had heaps of threads about what to take but this is more sharing a wee find that might be helpful. At the moment Pak N Save have little tubes of toothpaste on special, 2x20g for .99c its a new type so they are selling a sample like size and I just thought how perfect they would be for when Im in hospital plus for holidays to I guess. I brought about 3 packs (6 tubes) to pack away for travelling.
Also I cant remember who it was Jax or Jezika I think who suggested going onto the sunsilk and pantene websites and getting shampoo samples, I thought that was a great idea to, will be a very handy size for your toilet bag. Does anyone else have any ideas like this? I know my toilet bag was starting to bulge and it was hard because I didnt want to pack eveything that I would still use daily but also didnt want to leave it till the last minute.
Oh and another thought I had, Elastoplast are now doing a heatpad thing that is like a big band aid apparently but they produce heat for up to 8 hours. Ive got the big size one to go on my back during the early stages as I found heat great for the pain but it was hard to move with a wheatpack on. they are only about $10
