Joshua couldn't latch on and it was a nightmare. I got the medela nipple shields and they did the trick nicely - was able to get him feeding without them after about 5 days. One tip I learned was to "pull" your nipple outwards to make it stick out further before feeding. Worked well. And re the maternity bras - I got one cup size bigger and that was perfect. I would suggest getting a couple of the cheapie crop top style for the first few days as those boobies get sooooo huge when your milk comes in it was a relief to have something soft and comfy. Also, stock up on the breast pads!!

Nipple sheilds (plastic nipple shaped thingees you put over your nipples when breastfeeding) can help that - they also protect your nipple if bubs is having trouble latching on...medela make a good version - available at chemists and baby stores... sometimes your nipples come out after birth as well....lactation nurses/advisors are great for helping.

Could be useful for other ladies to hear, if they are having the same kind of issues, and can then see that it doesn't have to stop you from feeding even if it feels like an impossible problem.

    Author: Nic01
Subject: 2963
Posted: 25 June 2006 at 9:09pm

I got fitted for maternity bras when I was near the end of my pregnancy & they suggested going up a size so that I had room for when my milk came in. Anyway, the maternity bras were good for a few weeks while my milk supply was settling down but now they are way too big & feel like they are giving me no support, so I had to go out & buy more in the same size I was while pregnant. I was really annoyed.
So I wouldn't go out buying heaps of bras before you know what size you're going to be. A couple of cheap ones to wear for the first week or so is a good idea though but I'd probably get ones that are the same size that you are now but maybe in a stretch fabric so that they 'give' a bit when your milk does come in.
Talking about maternity bras - I got one from Farmers the other day which is a singlet with a built in maternity bra. Such a good idea - your tummy stays nice & warm while you're breatfeeding!

I might run into a few hiccups with supply / demand as Lena pointed out, but that's to be expected and I will manage I guess - and I can't see myself wanting to muck around in the shops with bub at a week old trying to get them fitted etc, when the best thing will be rest, relaxation and bonding with bubs / as a family.

    Author: lenabeanz
Subject: 2963
Posted: 25 June 2006 at 8:04pm

I got three in one size when I was about 35 weeks along - These 3 bras lasted the 3 1/2 months that I was breastfeeding Arna. The day my milk came in (day 3) i was like Dolly Parton so left my bra off that day but my milk supply had calmed down in the next 48 hours and wore the same 3 bras I wore at 35 weeks until Arna went onto a bottle.
You should already have milk in your breasts now, (colostrum) and the size you are now is usually the same size you are during breastfeeding. There will be days they will feel a bit looser / tighter but this is milk supply and demand (if bubs is having a cranky day / teething etc)
So if you have been fitted for maternity bras I don't see the point in mucking around getting bras you dont need / wont wear again.
