My s.i.l had a c-section, not from choice but because bubs was very big 10lb 11 (hoping this is not a family trait on the dh side of family!!!!lol), she has a very small frame as well. She found it very hard as couldn't drive anywhere for 6 weeks and very hard to feed bub because of the tenderness of the site and bubs size. I always thought I would prefer to have a c-s but after seeing her go through everything after it I am not so sure. I know that she would prefer now - if she had another, to have it naturally. I know this doesn't answer your question but its alittle insight for you. I had an elective c-s but only because I had one with my first son due to having diabeties, too much risk to me and baby having him naturally.. hence 2 elective c-s..

ALso my midwife is 'employed' through the hospital so she got paid the same as if I was having my kids naturally..

I had a medical reason for having mine so not sure on you sorry..

I think you can have an elective one due to psychological reasons (sorry that sounds awful but couldnt think of a better word). i had an elective c-section with jack as he was breech. i healed very quickly and was pretty much pain free most of the time, which i put down to having staples not stitches....oh and being tough

I don't think you can have a C section just cause 'you feel like it' I think as above there has to be a medical reason for it. Ok I was able to find you some answers from a bounty book from my pregnancy with Andrew

Reasons you may have an elective c section:

  • The baby is too big to go through you pelvis
  • Placenta praevia
  • Breech baby
  • Severe pre-eclampsia
  • Baby lying in an awkward position eg lying crosswise

I think midwifes don't get paid as much if it is an elective c section thats why they don't take them on. not 100% sure but I think if you get the right midwife or go through specialist care you can opt for one. There usually needs to be a reason why you are having an elective c section with your first. One case is with your second and you had to have an emergency one with the first.

Hi girls,

I'm not pregnant, but we will start TTC towards the end of the year. I just have a quick question. In NZ can you choose to have a CS or does there need to be medication reasons behind this decision?
