Did it with Brooke and will do it with Caleb when his time comes. $2 for the first tooth and it is the only tooth that you are allowed to keep forever, then $1 after that. I did get talked into giving $2 for double teeth though, that seemed to be the going rate at school at the time, or maybe I just got dupped.

This was the only money I ever gave out for tuck shop spending and Brooke was only every allowed to buy her lunch about 1-2 times a year so wasn't that big a deal.

We'll do it just because it's a bit of excitement for the kids, I don't care about the concept behind it, I just think its cool to see the look on kids faces when the tooth fairy's been Same with Santa, stupid concept but oh so fun.

We used to get 20c, 50c if they had to be pulled (to make way for other teeth).

At a school I was at a couple of years ago, the kids all got between $5-10 PER TOOTH! We do the tooth fairy thing, though the magic of it got spoiled as soon as they started school, along with santa and the easter bunny, thanks to brethren children telling all the other kids its not real and is just your parents. We used to get 50c/tooth, until my sister tripped on a slide, chipped her tooth, and got $1 for 1/2 a tooth! The fairy never got away with giving us less than $1 after that... .

We had the tooth fairy in our home growing up and it was very exciting. It wasn't about the money (50c), it was that a fairy had actually visited me in my sleep. So we'll be continuing this tradition in our household.

Think I'll go for 2 x 50c as silver's a much more fairy-like colour. i was talking to my son about it and he had no idea about the tooth fairy or getting a reward for his tooth so that decided it for me. i have of course kept his first tooth and am very proudly going to get him to open his mouth for all and sundry! What abouts books or an invitation/voucher to pick out a book?

I always got $2 and our children will get the same. I was told though that I will only get money from the tooth fairy if I have looked after my teeth well and that the money had to go into the bank. I did miss out on my $2 once coz I had been bad with brushing my teeth. I was also told that for the last one I would get something a little special but it never fell out.

in japan, they either throw teeth on the roof (if it was a bottom tooth), or bury in the garden (if a top tooth). this is to encourage them to grow straight towards that area...get it?

But when we were there the tooth fairy was also in action. We do the tooth fairy, we used to do $2 but have cut it down to $1 as DS1 has lost a few teeth, last one was while having dinner & he swallowed it, she still came, smart fairy, lol.

We have 3 kids so have factored that in as there is a lot of teeth.

We do the tooth fairy thing - we had it when we were kids, but boy have things changed!! The going rate for a tooth in these parts is $2! and some tooth fairies even give toys AS WELL!! Blimey - lucky we dont keep up with the jones' so to say! But it does put a bit of pressure on when the kids come home telling you what all their friends get! On more than one occaision we have had to explain that we cant have everything that other kids have - not an easy lesson to learn at any age.

We had the tooth fairy visit when we were kids but only got a small amount, maybe 10c compared to the dollar bills that were handed out to some of the kids down the road

Not sure what we will do and haven't really thought about it since we are still a few years away.

Maybe instead of money you could put a sticker or something little under his pillow? Or if you don't want to put anything under his pillow maybe something special for breakfast/morning tea tomorrow as a celebration even if it is something like a glass of juice/milo etc that are rarely had, losing teeth is a bit of a milestone showing that you are getting older

ETA: or if you do want something for under the pillow then maybe a voucher to redeem for a glass of juice/milo etc

I don't think we ever got anything for losing teeth! I do remember friends having the tooth fairy thing in ther homes, but even then they knew it was their parents!

I haven't given it much thought (given we only have 8 baby teeth so far!) but I don't really see a reason to *reward* the loss of teeth. It's all a bit strange if you look at it objectively! I'm all for childhood being a magical experience, but maybe it's just because I didn't grow up with the tooth fairy.
