One thing I loved about the first birthday parties I went to in Korea was a brief ceremony where a whole bunch of objects were placed infront of the baby and the one the baby would choose was an indicator of their life.

So for instance

string = long life
money = rich
pencil = scholar

My one tip would be to go to a party/hire centre and buy balloons from there - the ones they normally put helium in. They're so strong that no small child can pop them!
