Harness and if they don't like it then do as someone else said. behave good no harness, misbehave wear harness, they soon get the idea. The gremlins loved theirs, and still do - I think the secret to the attraction was that they had monkeys on them and they thought they were "cool". My 22 month is getting pretty bad with taking off too. I found these tots products Haven't got one yet but I am thinking about it. I bought a puppy backpack harness & my toddler loved waring it, great for piece of mind & safety.

I never cared what anyone thought about a child in a harness, better that than a child hit by a car or lost at the shops & anyway there are some really cute ones out there.

i think that basically you have to just hold tight to them - wether it be a leash or hand - or put them in a pushchair or a bike with a handle for you to push. (cause a smack aint going to do much after the kids been hit by a car!)

they eventually do out grow it - my boy was a runner and he did. i usually kept him in a pushchair or held his hand when walking near roads or dangerous places.

Geeesh...my stubborn little so and so wouldnt.   i just have to trick and distract him throughout the whole walk so he doesnt get a chance to run off....and when he does, he gets a smack! I dont care what people say...in my opinion, thats a life and death situation when there are cars nearby.

I bought a monkey backpack/harness for my nephew from K Mart a year ago. They had about 4 different styles. Not sure if they still have them or not, but worth a shot.

Harnesses are WONDERFUL! I've just started using one with Thomas, he will pull his hand away from mine and take off quicker than i can catch him. Jake did that once and got a firm spank on the bum and never did it again! But yeah a harness is a good idea (or retractable dog leash!!). I had one when I was litle. Apparently, the story goes, that I tried to take off oneday in Auckland airport. Dad just stood stock still and I ended up hitting the deck. NEVER ran away again.

 

He'll learn pretty quick.

Just wanted to add-the harness we have for DS is a monkey backpack & the tail is the leash you hold. We got it off trade me. He loves wearing his monkey! Harnesses are good, but if you can and he's ready for it talking to him, negiatoating with him, setting rules e.t.c

He may be a bit young for this around 2.5yrs - 3yrs is a good age. using praise and encouragement or rewards, works better when they are older.

Yep, I agree-harness. I know some people don't think they are very PC, but it's better than having a flattened or lost toddler. with a leash. Taine hated it, so we 'trained" him. Walking down the road, if he held my hand, he was okay, but if he took off- he got "the leash". we did this for a few weeks in our neighbourhood, and then he got the drift, we used the same techniques in more riskier areas - like town. we would also just put him in his pushchair - which he also hated.

Okay I will give the answer that I will get a lot of flack from others:

Harness.

Seriously it is the best thing out there. Some kids will hold hands real nicely and then all of a sudden see something and just start running and it is easy to slip out of your hands. However with a harness and you holding their hand it is almost impossible for them to get away from you.

And speaking from experience it stopped my girl a few times of going out in the road, as well as stopping her from falling ect.

You get some of them that have a backpack at the back with animals on it. Google it.

how do you deal with it? My 25 month old son has just started doing this, and always in a very dangerous or inappropriate place. It's very scary, and always unexpected - he'll be walking along very nicely with me, either holding my hand, or just beside me chatting away, and next hting you know he's dashed off sideways onto the road, or down a driveway, or this morning, on his bike out into the carpark.
