Some women choose to labor in the water and get out for delivery. Other women decide to stay in the water for the delivery as well. The theory behind water birth is that since the baby has already been in the amniotic fluid sac for nine months, birthing in a similar environment is gentler for the baby and less stressful for the mother.
I was open to the idea of actually having DD in the pool, but in the end it just didn't feel right (and turned out for the best seeing as the cord was wrapped around her neck a few times, and had to be cut before the rest of her came out - which would have been more difficult if I had remained in the water!).

I actually found that the water sped up my labour (as in went from 3cm to fully dilated in about 2.5 hours), so it was anything but painless for me! (I had some gas while in the pool, but that was it for pain relief). Having said that, I'm so glad I did spend a few hours in there, and next time will definitely do the same.

Just make sure you research your options, and be prepared that you might hate it once you're in there - so don't totally commit yourself to a water birth only, or you might be disappointed.

I found it helped so much with the pain, it was easy to move around because the water took all the weight off and my muscles werent sore and achy afterwards. I also found pushing not as hard cause I had gone all 'soft' down there if that makes sense. With my last baby the pool wasnt filled in time so I had her in the shower and that was just as awesome. I've also had a birth with no water and that was not for me at all. I agree explore all your options and if you decide waters not for you you can always get out. Good luck.

    Author: T_Rex
Subject: 29793
Posted: 08 November 2009 at 5:30pm

I'm still pregnant but I'd like to have a water birth if its possible. But just because your friends recommended it, doesn't mean it will be right for you. I really enjoy being in water, and I often have a warm bath to ease pains and discomfort, so for me, I know that I enjoy water when I'm in pain and it usually relaxes me. That makes water a good choice for me I think.

Another thing I like about water, is if I decide its not working for me, all I have to do is get out. I think its wise to research all your options for pain releif and have an idea of which ones you do and don't want to use so that if you decide you need something else as well as or instead of water, you have an idea of what you could use.

I can't help with central auckland though. sorry.

I'm a bit afraid of the labour and pains. I want to have a water birth because some friends recommended that it's easier and a pain less progress.

Has anybody here had a water birth before? or going to do it? Share some experience with me?

Oh, I live in central Auckland. Could you recommend some good water birth please?

Thanks

Lucy

Edited by babybaby
