Hi everyone.   Just thought I'd let everyone know he's been in and out of hospital 3 times.   His latest stint has been two weeks so far and he's still there. Feeding seems to be his biggest battle. He simply doesn't want to feed. How strange is that and if only I could have some of his problem!   Anyway he's going to have to come home with an NGT which isn't ideal.

Hi everyone, I am now home and just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone's kind thoughts and wishes. It has definately been a stressful time for us and no doubt the rollercoaster has really only just begun. Today Harlow was nice and stable, the nurses have said that I MIGHT be allowed a cuddle tomorrow, if not tomorrow, then not too far away. Am really looking forward to it but it's also very scary too. Wow I have been MIA lately and only just saw this post I have major waterworks right now and I have actually crossed paths with Juzzo before.

Rich you are such an awesome husband/Father thanks so much for keeping us all updated. Very sweet of little Harlow to put his 2 cents in hehe. Congrats to you both on such a gorgeous little guy. I can't imagine what you guys must be going through so many ups and downs, I guess he was just too excited about meeting his Mummy & Daddy that he couldn't wait. He looks so gorgeous, like a real fighter.

My little niece was born at 24 weeks and had 3 perforations of the stomach, a couple of hernias and brain bleeds of differing severities and shes now a delightful, healthy 10 yo with a high IQ! JIC you needed another positive story I've seen a few on this thread already.

Janie when hes holding Rich's hand (I'm assuming its yours Rich?) you really can tell how little he is!

I think the photos actually make him look bigger than he is. I thought that he looked bigger in the photos too, but when I actually met him I was quite shocked at just how tiny he is!

Im sitting here in tears, I just looked at his photos - I knew I shouldn't but I couldn't help it (my son was born at 26 weeks 5 days so brought back so many memory's)

he is a precious wee boy and is such a fighter!
hoping the brain bleed turns into nothing like it did for my wee boy (he had a grade 2 that healed itself!)

keeping you and your family in my thoughts
also if you or Justine have any questions please feel free to pm me we were in nicu for almost 4 months so learnt alot of the terms etc

I had the pleasure of meeting wee Harlow yesterday, he really is tiny but perfect too. I have just been looking at photos of his brothers when they were newborns and there is such a big resemblance!

Justine will be looking forward to coming home from hospital soon, it will be heartbreaking to leave Harlow behind but he is in such good hands.

Wow Harlow that really was a big day for all of you.

Hi y’all,

Day 4 dawned this morning, full of promise and magic … then 0530 struck. The doctors noticed something wrong with my tummy. It was an odd colour and distended. I didn’t do anything! Promise! Seems something bad happened overnight and I got a perforated stomach. That’s a hole in my stomach lining. I was breathing ok, ( by myself too!! ), but somehow the air that was supposed to go to my lungs was diverted to my tummy and it started to swell. Not sure what happened then, but a small hole appeared and air started leaking into my body.

Mum and Dad came in, signed some papers and then I had an operation. Two penrose drains were placed into my sides that allowed the air to escape and my tummy to go back to its normal size and man, I feel so much better! Thanks Dr Pringle! I was so good and I didn’t even get any lollies. I will have to collect those later on. Of course, this means I’m back on the ventilator and have stopped having any of Mums milk. Don’t worry though, it’s only for ten days and then I will be back on track. You watch.

That’s not it tho. I tell you, when I have a bad day, I go all out.

Not long after the tummy problems, I had a brain scan. You see, it’s pretty common for us really wee ones to get a brain bleed and I have one. It is just a small one, and before you lose it, it may mean nothing. It’s a grade one bleed on a scale of one to four. ( Four is pretty drastic, my doctors would be coming to talk to you. ) Mine is only a grade one, with no guarantees of anything bad at all. Good huh? They will not know if I will have any issues from this for a while, they need to scan my brain again at 36 weeks to see if there is any damage and if so, where it is. They can guess what kind of man I will be by knowing that.

So…

Here I sit, well, lie actually, under the blue light, just chillin’, wondering what the weather is like outside…

Congratulations on the safe arrival of little Harlow, I hope you are all well. Harlow will be in the bestest of care, NICU are just amazing. Ask as many questions as you want as NICU are there for you in every way.

One thing that may slip your mind as I'm sure you're busy getting used to life in NICU is take your camera and take plenty of photo's and video's of Harlow especially one's of him next to a measurable item. Even though they don't do much in their incubators I wish I had video's of them. That's one of the things I regereted the most is not having enough photo's & video's of the boys in NICU.

I would also say don't be affraid to talk to some of the other dads & mums in NICU as they're a great support/network who are going through the same thing as you.

Congrats on your little Harlow, Justine and Rich. We will still be here all eagerly awaiting updates and if you ever just need to chat or unload your thoughts.

He sounds like a fighter and I have no doubts that he will be fine. Scary to think that one of our Marcher's is already out... even if he was a little impatient to meet mum and dad!

ok, so there is more news... Harlow was born this morning.

I know you ladies will want all the gory details, so here they are from a mans point of view.

1. phonecall at 2:30am. having contractions again.
2. text at 3:08am saying they had done an internal and the cervix was closed.
3. phonecall at 3:45am from a midwife saying I was required.
4. arrived at 4:20 to find I was 15 minutes late. He had been born at 4:05am. 725 grams.

That puts him at 24 weeks 6 days.

the birth was "hard" [edited by dad] with the whole thing over in about 55 minutes, woah to go. he was a normal birth, but born breach. there was no fluid at all.

when I got there, he was in NICU getting his grease and oil ( I got to hold his hand for a bit ) then back to Girlie and her room for breakfast/ debrief. Back to NICU for more watching where Justine got to hold his hand also.

He now has more hoses/ lines/ cables/ tape/ etc going everywhichway, hooked up to some damn impressive looking gadetry.

He is good. His stats are all normal to excellent. He is pink, flapping his limbs around, looking like a a pug dog with his fur plastered to his head.

he didnt happen overnight, but he is worth it.

Thanks for the updates Rich glad to know hes still holding on and thriving. With there being not much fluid left is it replenishing itself and holding steady or dropping?
Anyway glad you're all doing ok. Here's hoping you guys have no more scares and Harlow stays happy inside for a wee bit longer. One thing is sure, he will be a much loved boy no matter what happens!

ok, a bit more news. there was Harlow blood found in Justines blood today, prompting another scan, enter panic mode. apparently this happens quite often with no adverse effects. the scan showed that the blood flows were all well and he is still happy, exit panic mode.

the doctors do not know if this is a new thing, or something that has been going on for a while, just undetected.

A close friend of mine has just had her wee girl at 26+5 after more than two months of bleeding, contractions and total bedrest. Her baby is doing really well and fighting hard and getting stronger every day.

Hang in there little Harlow - and your mummy too, bed rest is not so much fun.

In terms of how long waters can stay "broken" - my mum's waters broke at 27 weeks with my youngest brother and they kept her in hospital flat on her back giving her steroids and other things to stop labour. They kept saying "if we can just hang on one more week" every week and in the end she made it to 36 1/2 weeks before he was finally born weighing 7lbish. hi y'all.

scan time this morning, Harlow is growing well and is as healthy as an ox. an ox that lives in a matchbox. there is basically no fluid left, he will not be doing a tango anytime soon.

at 24w3d, he is 689 grams. he has put on about 160g in 2 weeks, thats pretty good im told.

Justine had small contractions over the weekend, nothing alarming, they went away by themselves.

meantime, the bleeding continues...
