A karitane nurse told me I was giving him too much formula (I recall about 4 x 200 ml bottles) and therefore he wasn't hungry. They told me to cut down his formula and I initially pooh-poohed the idea fearing it would disrupt his sleeping through the night. I got brave and eventually tried it (by 50ml a bottle) and that worked -- he was hungry and opening his little mouth like a little bird! It was a beautiful sight! And he still slept through the night, bonus.

Then when he started crawling at about 10.5 months, he got hungrier again from using all the energy.

Disclaimer: If you think about cutting your DD's formula, I'd recommend you call Plunketline first just to be sure.

Good luck, I know how blimmin frustrating a non-eating kid is.

    Author: EmilysMum
Subject: 29940
Posted: 16 November 2009 at 8:09pm

Hi TaylahsMummy. Have you heard of Baby led weaning? Its where you let your baby feed themselves, and the theory is that food is fun until they're one, and until then milk is the most important food. It sounds as though it might suit your DD really well, and at 10 1/2months its not too late to start. Basically its just letting her play with fingerfood and sample what she wants, and she'll eventually grasp the fact that food stops the hunger. Your LO is getting plenty of milk, and as she gets the hang of feeding herself she'll start cutting back on milk. For e.g, my DD is 9 1/2 months and is a whopping 12kg, but only has a max of 600ml a day. Shes been baby led weaned and it took her a couple of months before she really got the hang of eating, now there is no stopping her. Before that she just played with the food, sucked on it, chewed it, and spat most of it out.

Have a look at babyledweaning.com/forum there is loads of info and advice for people starting. I highly recommend it as it means you just have to sit back and let her learn how to feed herself. You'll also be able to trust that she'll know how much she needs to eat, rather than stressing about getting just one more mouthful into her. My DD has days when she hardly eats anything, and other days when she just doesn't stop eating! I just have to sit back and trust that she knows how much she needs and let her get on with it. Oh and its LOADS of fun!

Let me know if you'd like any more info. There is a really good book on it by Gill Rapley that explains the theory behind it too.

He wasn't an overly big boy, he didn't have rolls. But fighting with him over it, and stressing did nothing. In the end I just resorted to just finger foods and yoghurt. I'd put everything on the tray, leave him to it and after a set amount of time if he was still fluffing around I'd get him down and repeat for every meal. It wasted lots of food BUT after a week or two of it he finally realised it was a good thing to eat and got stuck in and hes been good since.
