so after saying that he doesnt rip them, I find him in his room tearing a book apart I was so angry with him. He must have realised this as he went straight to sleep after that. It was only a second hand book we got from the local school fair (fill a bag for $5) but that is not the point. It saddens me so much when kids wreck books. I dont mind books getting worn out....but this....

Another good one we have...but is strictly "with mum and dad" is called Look and Find Thomas and Friends and it is a picture book where you look around to find certain objects. Thanks for the suggestions! We have Hungry Caterpillar which is now in about 5 pieces. They loved it to death

They have 2 Hairy Maclarey books but are still only interested in the pictures.

They're current favourite kind of book is just picture ones that they can identify objects.

nzpiper, that's what I'm thinking of doing. To buy some books that we read with them and let them continue to ransack the books they currently have.

Tom's favourites are

Piggity Wiggity Jiggity Jig (awesome story)
Giraffes Cant dance (another awesome story)
Any Hairy Mclary ones- although he might be outgrowing them
My Mum
My Dad
Room on the broom (Julia Donaldson)

anything to do with letters (eg ABC)

he did like lift the flap books but is a bit boisterous now.

I'd say have a look at some of Julia donaldson books...they have awesome rhymes. and definitely look at giraffes cant dance...its gorgeous.

Also remember to "upgrade" them to the next level. Tom still enjoys a board book but happily listens to non board books now...and doesnt rip them. any lynley dodd, hairy mc clary books are excellent for rhyming.
The hungry caterpillar is great too for counting and colours.
Pop up's or open the flaps are still popular at this age too.

Lynley Dodd books are always a hit, and Gwenda Turner's book "Over on the farm is just neat - rhyming, animal noises and counting all in one.
