We had a nature's sway hammock too - and absolutely loved it. DS slept wonderfully in it in the lounge during the day, and next to the bed - a mere finger bounce away - at night, which was really convenient.

I was really worried about moving him into his cot from it (not being able to rock him to sleep etc) - but it went so smoothly - he barely seemed to notice. I had one with my daughter and I have a very strong warning for you!! Of course it wont apply to every baby, but my little girl adored her hammock, in fact, she loved it so much, she wouldnt sleep anywhere else! So when she outgrew it, life was rather difficult while she adjusted to a flat sleeping surface...I just wish someone had warned me!

I think the way to go would be to mix it up, maybe a hammock for day sleeps and you could move it around the house with you, and a cot/bassinet at night?

I had one with my boy and he slept in it for about 2months day and night.
I can't say he really liked it that much but I didn't have bassinet.
It can be difficult to get them to sleep in a cot afterwards as they become so used to being rocked or bounced to sleep. This wasn't a problem for us as that the part my boy disliked.
We had a natures sway with frame and door clip.
If you want to use them in hospital I know that Birthcare provide them in Auckland central. Just popped into the babyfactory to see the Nature Sway in the flesh...the lady said that the baby can be in a hammock until 13kg (so that must be approx 9 mnths?). We were pretty impressed by the hammock so might see if we can pick one up on trademe - didn't like the frame on the babyfactory one.

We also asked her how long a baby could be in a bassinet, thinking bassinet = bigger than hammock, therefore it could be in it longer. But she said only 3-5 months in a bassinet. We have that we will use for our baby, my SIL used it for their son and loved it.

 

My Dad actually slept on one when he was on a boat trip for a month, he has always had a terrible back and was concerned to start with, but said that it was the best sleeps he had ever had, the natural swing of the hammock was really settling and the way your body lays in it meant your back was fully supported and you didn't get that need to roll over that you do in a normal bed. So, if it works for a 50 year old man with a bad back I can imagine it would be great for a newborn.

 

I can't wait to use ours. Oh, and we've got the nature sway stand with the actual hammock from baby hammock.

 

Monikah - where did you get the attachment for the door frame?? I'd love to get one of those

Its designed to support them in their natural curved position, their backs arent designed to be flat

ETA - My DH said for you to ask him what position the baby was in when he was in utero (it wasnt dead flat)

Thanks everyone :-) DH has asked me to ask another question about them....how good are they for babies back?It looks like the bases aren't solid and hes a bit worried about the curvature in their back.

Flissty - great idea about the hospital, I think i will do the same. weve got a natures sway hammock Riley sleeps in that during the day and bassinet at night. He settles really well in it. We dont have a stand though its on a hook. Oh and ours was on a stand too, but the chain it was suspended from was adjustable so you could make it higher/lower as needed. I loved the hammock with lil miss - at 3 weeks she developed a sudden aversion to her cot and I rushed out in a panic after a week of no sleep and bought a hammock and she settled in it instantly. Like lilfatty we used a Natures Sway with stand in the lounge for both boys day sleeps. It was brilliant with Jack and he was in it until about 5 months, he hadn't outgrown it though. Ben only used it for about 2mths, then he didn't seem to like it and I moved him to the cot.

We borrowed an Amby, but I didn't use it for long, as it came with a stand and I wasn't so hot on bending down as low as it seemed to hang... the bassinette was easier for me, though DD2 has now outgrown it. We used a natures sway hammock for both our kids. We only used it for day sleeps though (it was in the lounge), it was good because it rocked itself.

Is anyone else considering using a baby hammock? I have heard really good things about them - such as the child sleeps more soundly, settles a lot faster and it means when you go away you can take their actual bed with you. I couldn't find any bad reviews online, people just seem to rave about them.

I didn't even know they existed until a friend told me. Has anyone had any experience with them or heard anything about them at all? If you have had experience with them, what brand did you use? did they live up to all the hype? and how old was your baby when it out grew the hammock?
