My boy has only just started supporting himself on his arms and holding his head up in the last week or so, and that's mostly because I pretty much put him in that position. If I don't put his arms right he gets grumpy and isn't so good holding his head up. But on my chest he's been holding it up from very early on so I've never worried. Suddenly he seems a lot better/happier on his tummy. He is also much better when I take his nappy off for tummy time - he is in cloth and they can be bulky and I think it was getting in the way.

Hey Laura, my nearly 3 mth old does lift her head up when she wants to b nosey but most of the time is happy to just have her cheek to the ground. She doesnt use her arms to push up. Does Zara hold her head up well when you are holding her?

All babies develop differently so dont be too worried.

Thanks for sharing all your experiences. It really goes to show that all babies do things in there own time. I am taking Zara for her 3 month jabs on monday so have made an appointment with her doctor before hand to discuss my worries. I had an appointment with Zara's Pediatrician this week but when he checked her neck strength he didnt say anything and I didnt ask..stupid I know. Plunket drive me around the bend. I personally would check with a Doc I trust over Plunket everytime. Plunket exaggerate everything and have a tendency to make something out of nothing. Are you taking bubs in for her 3 month Jabs I only ask because maybe you could bring it up with the doc then.

It sounds like your doing a great job babe and not all kids like tummytime my two hated it lol. I don't have a kid of my own yet (only 12 days to go!!!) but from the studies I have done in child development, every child is different and will do things in their own time.
Yes, ask Plunket, but also just be wary of them.
A good friend of mine was told that there was something wrong with her baby cause he wasn't crawling by 9 months old. So Plunket sent some dvelopmental expert around who, in short, proceeded to tell my friend that she had raised her child wrong and had created this issue herself by demand feeding her baby and doting on him and was pretty much told she was "too emotionally attached" to her son.

I would hate for someone to come around and tell me everything I had done with my child was wrong and I have "bred developmental issues" by loving him too much.

My girls have really good head control, although apparently it's a premmie thing and their necks are stronger anyway, so they have been holding their heads up since they were born (this is what Neonatal told us when the girls were in the incubators holding their heads up). My girl had really good head support from the start and liked tummy time but has hardly rolled and has never gone back to front and she's over 9 months now. I stressed about it for awhile but Plunket aren't worried and now neither am I. Ask plunket at the 3 month check up. There is a thing called floppy baby syndrome and the first signs of that are not lifting head up or partially supporting themselves whilst being changed etc, so basically having no more muscle tone than a newborn and it's normally around 3-4 months that parents notice a problem.

Not saying she has it at all, but just that it never hurts to ask a medical person just to be sure.

Both my boys were quite good on their tummies, Spencer hated tummy time and learnt to roll at 10 weeks just so he could get out of it and Kyle had freakishly good head control, he could pretty much hold his head up at birth and he was rolling at about 6 weeks. (that is abnormal though, the plunket nurse was even surprised with his head control).

Hi Laura,

I have never actively given my DD tummy time and at 8mths she is perfectly fine. I wouldn't worry too much at all - At 3mths my DD could hold her head quite well but not as strong as other babies her age. Laura, Jackson is really lazy at tummy time. He does lift his head but only for a few minutes before getting grumpy or lying there sucking his fists He hasnt yet figured out how to push himself up yet either. Umm, from memory I think my son was a bit older than 3 months when he started lifting his head up. He hated tummy time, and I thought he was developing late with tummy-based stuff too. He started rolling a little later too.
Now he's just started crawling, and I can't stop him from rolling and crawling, he just won't stay on his back!!
I am sure your little girl is doing just fine, and she'll get there in her own time. I am really worried about my 3 month old (13 weeks). She is not able to lift her head when she is having tummy time. She will move her head from side to side but will not push up using her arms. She has Hypothyroidism which may have hindered her development a little. Does anyone know when babies should be doing this.
