I am out west but we are possible on the same 'grid'? Are you on the Shore? Because every time there is a power cut over here our water goes off for longer than the power does.

Thanks for the tips ladies! Well I rang the power co and they are sending someone over so hopefully it won't cost but the most we will have to pay is the $50 call out so not too bad.

Mum2Ella - we had a power cut on Weds too so maybe it is to do with that? Although we did already fiddle with turning off and on etc...

DF is a electrician, I've helped/seen him do plenty of these... It seems to be the most common problem (if you know its not your power)


yup we just had to do ours. Lucky my grandad is multitalented and he did ours. On your power bill, what kind of unit meterage does it have? ie are you on day/night, controlled, anytime etc? The power companies only control your hot water in some situations, and it's very rarely noticeable, but a powercut certainly could effect the heating of it.

You could ring your power comany, and they may send someone out to look at it, but if nothing is wrong, they'll redirect you to a plumber/electrician and charge you a callout fee. Another common fault if it isn't the power company- the elements blown.
If its blown you'll find your water slowly gets colder over a few days... Your electrician can change this for you, usually only a 10min job... (the thing taking ages is they have to empty the hot water cylinder to do this)

The power co's do actually turn off/on your hot water to cope with peak times and they can miss turning it back on sometimes. (Although they never admit to it). DP is a plumber and he often tells people to ring them first and ask about it (even though they normally say on no it's not us) then wait a few hours and see if it is getting hotter. We had our power cut on Tues for 5 hrs and then on Wed morning discovered that we had no hot water- it does suck. I spent most of the day playing around with it and in the end I think it was turning off the main power switch and then turning it back on again that did the trick- didn't discover this until later in the afternoon which meant we had no hot water until Thurs morning (spent the night at my parents).

I have no knowledge in this area whatsoever but our hot water isn't working! It is heating up to warm but that's it....
