It's not too hard to untether etc... the hard part is putting the damn locking clip on the seatbelt! It takes me about 1/2 an hour!!! we got a safe n sound one from a friend who had bought it for their daughter just before she turned 1, then got a new carseat when she was about 3 so it was pretty new - paris used that till ayja was ready for a bigger carseat, and we got paris one that i cannot remember the name of.. helpful i know - but it was i think $259 from baby factory and it's wonderful - supposeadly from birth upwards but i wouldn't use it for that - not enough padding. Will find out later when mike comes home.

hmm another thing to consider as well...if we leave bubs with the grandparents for a day or so then they need a carseat as well...and buggered if im going to tether/bolt and untether/unbolt from one car to another

As far as I know Plunket say to keep them rearward facing until at least 12months, but the manufacturers guidelines say at 9kg.

We have a hired carseat from plunket, its $25 every 6 months. I have the blue safe and sound one, I think it was around $260 when we bought it. I'd reccommend this one too, comfy, easy to clean the cover (chuck in the washing machine - think sick ), easy to get the child in and out.

As for why you should keep your child rearward facing, it is because in an accident, if your child is facing rearwards, in a serious crash, their spine is protected by the carseat.. they might break their leg/s if in a really bad crash.. and well, if you have them facing forwards too early, they will come off a lot worse in a crash. Plunket (and others) might be suggesting that you turn them around before 1 year, but I wouldn't recommend it, even if they are getting long. I can find the studies that were done on this if you want me to.

Maya had a Safe and Sound till she was 2 and it got destroyed when my car got broken into (long story). She now has an Evenflo Apollo which cost me $199 and is suitable from 6 mths to about 6-7 years (36kg). It has a full harness and tether strap, and tehn when bubs is around 4 you take the harness off and you can use it as a booster seat until they are much older.

I bought the Safe and sound Guardian too from Baby Factory $269.95. They said when your bub is 9kg they can sit on the forward facing seat...and Zaara is 9kg+

It looks comfy and because it is high Zaara likes to look out side and that keeps her calm, and the fact that she can see her Dad and I from the back.

The safe n sound is bot rear facing and forward facing however if you have it rear facing it does take up alot of room in the back do if you are a taller driver you need to make sure you out it behind the passanger seat. just safer I guess, but I know for Taine (jake - were in Japan, and used the train), he is getting really tall. His head is just about coming over the top. Apprently when it is just over halfway over the top, you need the next size up. I'm a bit worried about Taine going into a forward facing one. Stopping in an emergency would give him wicked whiplash. I mean, he holds his head up well, in fact I would say he'll be crawling in the next month or so, but still...

We've bought the Safe and Sound (I'm sure that's the brand) Meridian AHR with side impact technology. Seems to have the best reviews and goes from birth to 18kg I think it is. Oh so glad you asked as I am looking at buying the next size carseat at the moment too. I have heard good things about safe and sound seats, but they are expensive. Still I think its worth spending the money being so important to our kids safety!
