bleach in the water seems to work, I add a couple of capfuls to a full machine of water, once its finished filling up ( and that was for some very mouldy mildewy curtains that were in the house we recently moved in to)

One of James' new outfits got "lost" at the bottom of the washing basket for about a week with cherry stains all over it. I found it today and its also covered in mould spots.
