I hadn't heard of the name for it, but after giving birth the mw put Chelsea on my chest and said she would find it by herself. Was so cute seeing her little head moving around, but sadly she got lost and mw had to direct her towards it hehe. Interesting. I didn't know about this but one of my main things was skin to skin & letting Cooper latch himself. he didnt' do the salivating thing but now days he "assumes" the position & starts moving his tongue & licking his lips. Quite hilarious & was unnerving but am now used to it. I loved the breast crawl, it was the best thing for me as a new mother to experience. I found it great for my bonding experience, just me and him time. My boy didn't crawl to the breast at all but instead was placed there. Thanks Deb so much for posting this and the link.
I had heard of it, but not considered it as an option to include in my birth plan, only cos I no idea about it, or the benefits for baby and mum.
I saw this post and watched the video 2 days before Aiden was born and Im so pleased I did! Aiden was placed immediatley onto my chest and latched himself after 40mins. I just told my midwife that I wanted to wait for him to latch himself . I watched that before but it didn't really seem to me that the baby was crawling to the breast by itself, more that the doctor (or whoever that guy was) was slowing pushing him that way so it seemed that way.

Maybe I'm just to much of a cynic. Both my boys went on the breast pretty much straight away, Spencer within 20 mins (c/s) and Kyle it was longer as I threw up and then needed to be stitched up cos of vontouse delivery and I actually felt too unwell to even hold him whilst they were pulling and pushing me around. My boy did this, I woke up in the night at hospital and he had made his own way to my breast and latched on himself. He still does it, its really cute, especially when he tries it with his Daddy.

I'd never heard or seen anything about it until he did it

With both my boys they put them on me while still in surgery (had to have c-section with both). Then on the way from surgery to recovery my mum and the midwife made sure baby would not slide off me.
It was really great as I felt a bit bad about having a c-section.

I only got a snuggle with Tom but James (following a c-section) got the full works. Yup was on our birth plan too... darn c-section! Couldnt even touch him due to have lines in both arms.. but as soon as I was in recovery he was put on my chest...DH forgot lol and kinda shoved him at my breast LOL He was just so happy we were both ok and tbh I had forgotten too.. I so desperately wanted this because I was nervous about breastfeeding and thought it would be a good start. My mw was aware of that, it was in the birth plan. Instead the student mw, whom I had never met and appeared out of nowhere, forced Hollie to latch. She was a useless teacher and I get that they all have to start somewhere, but I was not the mother to start on.

I hated breastfeeding. Carried it through till 8 months without pain or hassle but felt uncomfortable and blergh.

I had skin to skin with my last baby just recently, didnt get it with my other two, but this time i noticed he started the salivating like it does in the videos. When I had McKayla we had to have a c-section and I was put under general. Grant however was there and got to hold her and they put her in an incubator and moved her to the nursery where it was already organised that he will do Kango care (I insisted) basically skin to skin contact. McKayla apparently immediately started rooting and then tried to suck on Grant and then would go red in the face and scream. The one nurse wanted to put her back in the incubator as she said then the baby will be quiet. Grant refused and when I was finally awake (about an hour) they brought her to me and in about 1 minute flat she found that nipple and got stuck in there.

This thing is amazing!!!! We got shown it at the breastfeeding classes i went to when i was pregnant with my son (16months). Both our babies did this and it blew my mind. I was a little surprised after reding Treens thread in the pregnancy section that many hadnt heard about the breast crawl.

i could only find one video of it and a lot doesnt apply to western society but you may find it interesting nevertheless.
