Yes care packages are good, my DH loves Afghan biscuits. Pictures from kids are good too.

IOT is very hard and don't expect to hear from him for a little while. My DH did this in 2008 and it is very hard - both mentally and physically.

I live and work in Waiouru so know a few things. OCS isn't the only thing there we are a small camp but we have the training schools - both for Officer Cadets and Recruits but also most of the training schools for the corps.

With his mail, wait to hear from him as to what can be sent, some staff will let them have their mail (and the treats), however some of them make them share everything. I know a few of the staff there, but with posting round last year a heap of people got posted out of OCS and now I don't know who is there now.

If you want to know anymore, PM me and I can try and help you out.

Are you based up north also?

Mine is always away for a few months at a time (shortest is a week) but hasn't been overseas yet (while Ive been with him) I haven't sent him letters, usually just the odd phone call or text... I wait to hear from him but Im sure your partner would love getting letters from you, I have heard that some sections withhold letters as punishment but I guess it depends on who is in charge, like any place there are good and there are d!ckheads who don't have families who just don't understand how hard it is on a relationship...

sometimes I get the feeling of being 'left behind again' but I have all my family and friends here so its not so bad (plus my house seems to stay tidy when he is away )
