Debbie Fawcett is based in Lorne St,near the hospital.I rang her when I was 5 weeks pregnant.I went to Waterford and got a list of midwives that work out of there.I then did loads of ringing around.Some were going to be away in Sept,some were booked!I then just picked a few and arranged to meet them.I knew Debbie was the right one for me straight away.I wasn't happy with my last midwife,so wanted to make sure I got the right one this time around.
I will see here for the first official visit when I'm 11 weeks(I'm going away at 12 weeks,as soon as I have my scan)And then will see her again   a few weeks later when I'm back to see about the scan

LA - I booked Colleen at 5wks, so certainly don't worry about it being too early. The earlier the better really for mw's, as the good ones get taken up first. Lost Amber.-Have decided to go with Debbie Fawcett.She is sooo nice.Had heard so many good things about her and a friend who works at Anglesea,said she is one of the ones they recommend.

Nee, I wasn't aware that your birthing was difficult, i'm sorry *hugs* I will give them both a call and see if/who is available in October. I feel stupid calling them so soon though- I didn't even see my MW again after the first visit with the first pregnancy, as I went to my GP after a week of spotting (didn't want to be one of those first time mums that call their MW over every little thing), and then I asked her if she could call my MW and tell her the pregnancy had failed. Turns out I should've called her as I was rhesus negative and needed the Anti D upon first sight of spotting. LA - Colleen has access to everything, its up to you where you choose to birth. For me, I'll be birthing at Waikato (due to some recent developments) and then transferring to Waterford, but I'm doing antenatal at RR. You have those choices no matter where you go, or rather who you go with.

Oh and the other thing that I really like and was really important for me is that Colleen is a lactation consultant also.

I really like Colleen but I didn't really get to know her very well and only met her towards the end of my pregnancy.

For me personally I am going to choose Rachel again next time as I got to know her really well. I had a lot of breastfeeding issues the first time around and she went out of her way to help me get to the bottom of them all and make a really good plan to overcome my challenges.   and she did that all without pushing breastfeeding on me or forcing me to see it one way.    She is very into what you feel comfortable with, how you feel about things and helps you to make informative decisions and plans based on your own way of thinking.     I was so gutted not to have her at my birth as it didn't go well and I think had she been there, it would have ended better!

I met both Rachel and Colleen when I was choosing my mw and they were both lovely - I just felt I had more of a connection with Colleen. The best advice I can give you, is what my Doctor's nurse told me. Give about 5 mw's a call and go and meet with them, you will be spending a lot of time with them so you need to feel comfy with them. They don't mind you meeting several of them - in fact they kind of expect it.

Clare Hutchinson at the Midwifery Centre next door to River Ridge.

She's big old dutch lady but very nice, and very funny.

She's probably not everyones cup of tea though. She's a bit of a hard a$$ and doesn't stand for any crud. Like when I was giving birth to Mac I was messing about with my pushing cause I was scared of tearing. The fact that she is an ex GP is what makes me want to take that route. 5x roads is also very convenient for me here in Silverdale/Hillcrest. I like straight up but want kind and understanding too.

So who out of Rachel and Colleen would you go with?

Rachel Cassie at the Midwife Shoppe in 5XRoads is very thorough, straight up but also very understanding and kind hearted.   She talks heaps and heaps but always listens to your concerns and is great at getting back to you straight away if you need her.      I loved the fact that she used to be a GP.     I always feel safer around doctors so that was an added bonus for me.

I think you'd do quite well with Colleen LA. She is very thorough, and I have found her to be gentle but straight up, and quite mumsy (in a good way). She used to be a neonatal nurse as well. Give her a call and have a chat, but probably sooner rather than later as she tends to fill up pretty quickly.

Congratulations I had Debbie Fawcett she was fantastic, came in on her weekend off for my delivery and then stayed the whole time when it ended in an emergency c-section. Her backup Sallie Turner was great too. My MW was Rachel Cassie and she is absolutely awesome!!    She was a GP for 15 years before becoming a midwife so I really trusted her and felt safe with her.   Her backup Rebecca was at my birth because Rachel was on holiday and although she probably had some different ideas to my own (she is very much into non intervention and doing things naturally) she is still very nice.

But yeah, I highly recommend Rachel Cassie, she has children, knows her stuff, is very approachable and friendly and very thorough without being pushy.    She didn't force opinions on me and kept me very well informed with everything I needed to know.

I had Shelley Sjaarda first time around and she was good too, although I switched to her at 28 weeks so didn't really get to know her very well. I have Rachel Cassie (recommended by my gp) and am finding her pretty good so far. She used to be a GP which I quite like. Her back up, Rebecca, is also lovely.They are based at the Midwife Shoppe in Peachgrove Rd. A friend had Jo Coulter and thought she was great.

I used Colleen van der Laan with bub 1 & 2 and her. She's going to be away when #3 is due so am using her back up Shelley Sjaarda (who incidently delivered #2) and she is really lovely too.

I can't recommend Kathryn Duggan and her partner Rebecca Tainui highly enough. I had Kathryn as my lead but saw Rebecca a few times and they were both lovely.
