You can get these things from kmart that are like a wee cagey thing so you don't roll on bubs.

My midwife told me not to have the baby in the middle of you both because dads might roll on them because they don't have a maternal instinct. I had a moses basket that was the same height as our bed that kept Andrew next to my head and pillow without being in the bed. He stayed in our room until he was about 6 months old and Nick moved him into his own room. It's been good to establish his bed as a sleeping place so haven't had any sleep issues with him at all.

Now htat he is older he is often found in our bed at some point. Usually when is feeling abit under the weather with teething or if hejsut need's a cuddle. I think as long as you are very aware and careful it is fine although I was really not to comfortable with it till he was older and I knew he could move if he got too hot etc.

However i must say since she has been sick in the last week, she has slept alot in our bed, and so has Paris - on different nights thank god. Ayja has now decided our bed is GREAT. last night woke for the second time in an hour didnt need changing didn't need bonjela, didn't need a feed, mike stuck her on our bed, and well... the screaming stopped and tantrum stopped righ tthere, she crawled over to me, stuck her head down on the pillow and rolled over so she was snuggle dup in our bed, and looked as if to say "no way am i moving this is all i wanted" monkey!

Anyway it has it's pros and cons.
Nice for cuddling etc, but we didn't do it all the time or let the kids get used to it, i think it's nice to have your own bed, to yourself and your partner... and let the kids snuggle when it's really needed, at least then, you know you have something that is a last resort sure fire trick to settle them. If they always sleep in your bed.. what would that last resort be?

Some things it says are :
Benefits of sleeping with babies include- more breastfeeding, more loving contacts, less crying, longer sleep.
Safe bedsharing - a smokefree pregnancy (and after), safe adults to bed share with , safe places to sleep, safe postion for baby- on the back.
Unsafe bed sharing - when adults are less aware (after smoking, drugs or alcohol), unsafe places (babies can roll to face down on soft surfaces, bean bags, waterbeds, couches, chairs), unsafe bedding (loose bedding can bunch up or cover the face & babies may slip down under blankets & duvets), less safe postions for baby ( on front or side).

My best friend and her husband co-shared with there daughter full-time for months ( cant remember how long) but did have problems getting her into a cot. They are co-sharing with their 4 week old now too. Will ask her if she has any tips!
Hope this is helpful.

Edited by Kellz

She was fine, I was not.
As I said, it was not an easy habit to break. We tried lots of different things before eventually doing C.I.O. to teach her how to self-settle.
It didn't affect our private lives too much but I was really glad to get our bed back for ourselves.
While I have nothing specific against co-sleeping after our experience, I don't intend on doing it again when this little guy arrives. I just think it will be easier long term for us to get him in the habit of self-settling from the beginning if we can.

Edited by caraMel

That was loud enough. She slept with us several times but wiggled and turned sidewards and kept us all awake. I found she slept better and more soundly in her own bed and so did we. And it did not set up any disasters or problems with dramas when she was older - sleeping in her own bed..not coming out etc. Which from what I have heard can be a real problem!

In saying that....If she is ever really sick now she sleeps with me....or the odd ocassion as a treat Mark gets booted out and she comes in. (AND SHE STILL SLEEPS SIDEWARDS AND PUTS HER LEGS ON TOP OF ME.....7 years later!!! LOL)

Now if I put her in the bed she stretches out like a starfish and I am forced to the other side of the bed, teetering on the edge. Or have my stomach pummelled (sp?) by little kicky feet all while she is sleeping?!?!?!?

I am not a huge roller, or heavy sleeper (well, used to be light, now it takes a brick to the head before I wake up!) so was never concerned about rolling on Han.

It wouldn't be a fixed decision anyway, whatever ends up working best I would stick with and I don't know what that is yet of course LOL I would look on The Nappy Network but for some reason I have found it is REALLY slow to log in and load for me, and I haven't had the patience. Might give it a go though, and see what I can find.

Also have a look at naturalparenting.com.au i think it is.

Personally, I dont like co-sleeping. The odd night Hannah has slept in our bed I have hardly slept at all for fear of suffocating her and shes really squirmy and noisy!
