Get CZ if that it what you love and are happy with, who cares what is apparently "traditional". You don't even have to get CZ if you're not to fussed on the diamond look. There are plenty of other lovely semi precious stones that make stunning rings and are more affordable. Just bear in mind the metal that the ring is made of because you'll need to have the same metal in your wedding band. re: your ring, I agree go with something you love, you will be wearing it for the rest of your life and you'll keep looking at it long after everyone else has had a look.

We too were tossing up diamonds or not when we got engaged (were real young on one stink income). We were going to get one with CZ's in it, but found one of the stores had 50% off so ended with a diamond for the same price, but I dont think anyone would actually notice whether they were CZ's or diamonds, (I wouldnt anyway!).

sure

Crunch Cake recipe:

125g butter
125g icing sugar
4T golden syrup
4T cocoa
190g cornflakes
one large bottle of cream, whipped
berries

Heat everything except the cornflakes in a large pot until it's all melted together and bubbling. take off the heat and add cornflakes. mix it all together until the cornflakes are well coated with the sauce. line a cake tin with baking paper and press half the mixture into it. cover with more baking paper and press the rest of the mix on top (the baking paper separates the layers and makes it easy to take them out).
put it in the fridge until it is cold and set. take out one layer and put it on a plate, cover with whipped cream and add berries (i like LOTS of berries, it cuts through the sweetness of the chocolate a bit).

I love ring shopping! There are def no rules. 2 friends of mine lately have flagged engagement rings and just got a wedding ring. They couldn't really afford both and wnated a super funky more expesive one ring.

I have news!!!!!!!!!!
drumroll please..............

after all this waiting and fluffling around and what ifs i decided that last night would be the night, i guess once i decided that i was going to ask him i didn't want to wait around to do it.
so i had a romantic evening all planned out; i made him his favourite dinner (macaroni cheese, he has sophisticated tastes, my man lol) and his favourite dessert (i never make dessert so that was a big enough surprise in itself) and i was going to bring him his dessert and ask him to marry me........unfortunately things did NOT go as planned.

first of all, he found the dessert which was meant to be part of the surprise..... but that was ok, i could live with that. then just after he'd finished his dinner he announced that he was stuffed full and couldn't possibly have dessert just yet.... that was ok too, i'd just do it later when he wanted dessert. then a carload of his friends turned up.......NOT ok!
so he went outside and played with his friends for a couple of hours while i sat inside watching tv and getting more and more nervous and then they were just leaving when ANOTHER of his friends turned up to poach off our wireless internet! he didn't leave until 11.30pm and by then DP had already had dessert, the moment had passed and i thought it was all over red rover.
then it was bedtime. i made DP a cuppa and while i was doing it, thought 'stuff it, i'm not letting this stop me!', so i marched in there with his coffee where he was standing by the bed wearing only a towel, held out the cup and said "hayden, will you marry me?"
his reaction: "what?......why?...............i mean, yes, but why??"
i ignored the why's and the what and just decided to focus on the yes
then he gave me a big big hug and a kiss.

ps. I'm Engaged!!!!!!!!!!!!

ETA: as it turns out, he WAS going to propose to me but he was just waiting until he had everything sorted and had bought a ring. i was just too impatient lol.

My mate propsed to her man and she was the same just wanting to do it now but she had a plan stuck to it. She even had a ring and he said yes

that's what i'm worried about! i keep wanting to talk to his mum about it (i tell her everything) but then i think of what will happen if he says no, maybe it's best if nobody knows so the embarrassment is minimal lol.

My mum's friends daughter got engaged recently , her DF and his friends were playing their band in the middle of Howick , everyone else was in on it except her, so someone conveniently had a camera to capture every single moment, her seeing him play , him coming over, him bending down , him asking , her gasping , her saying yes, them hugging etc etc etc .

Very sweet and what a cool thing to have recorded but I couldn't help thinking , imagine if she had said no , and he had organised the cameras , wouldn't he have felt like a right arse!!!

Awwww, all the engagement/proposal stories are cute and/or romantic and/or funny.
DP and I are still both marriage shy but not been together that long either.
The only funny story I have is when he asked me out :P
We were both working in the deli at new world, and I was doing dishes out the back, we had been joking around about this and that all day, so he comes up next to me, and asks me, Do you wanna go out somewhere sometime, just you and me?,
First thing out of my mouth.. Are you joking?
Poor guy thought that meant no. He'd been getting his nerve up for almost a week!!!!
PS I'm his first ever girlfriend so it was the first time he had ever asked anyone out!!,

oooh, i proposed to my husband... it probably wasnt the most romantic setting. we were staying overnight at wilson home to give his sis a break with her boy and i asked him in bed...

He turned me down!

you wont need a ring, maybe a flower or something to give to him so you dont have to look him in the face!

just thought i'd do a quick update and ask for some suggestions......

my birthday is coming up on the 11th and DP's birthday is on the 12th so i've decided that if he hasn't popped the question on either of those days (i'm not holding my breath) then i am going to propose to him on valentines day!
unfortunately i have no idea how these things are done so that is where you lovely ladies come in.

Hehe, I felt the same about the 'down on one knee' bit - DH did, and I was so embarrassed I wanted to pull him back up.

Ours was just a semi-romantic early-morning-walk-along-the-beach thing, which suits me down to the ground. It's a lovely memory.

I don't really go in for mushy stuff much. My sisters fiance proposed by sending her on a hunt for roses hidden round the Hamilton gardens, and then a clue that took them out to Raglan for a romantic picnic, and then words written on the sand, and she loved it, but me? aw that's so cute, kiwisj! all these stories make me so amazed that all your men (well, maybe not ALL lol) are so romantic! it must just be my bad luck that my DP's idea of a romantic first date was to take me up a mountain on a quad bike (might i add the trail was overgrown by gorse bushes, ouchie!!), he did thoughtfully bring me a pair of gumboots though

ETA: Flake - burger rings are indeed on my shopping list and it's grocery day today!! lol. actually i was thinking about it, both out birthdays are coming up on the 11th and 12th of feb so maybe (cross fingers) he might be planning something for then.........either that or he's just forgotten it.
i'm thinking, if he doesn't do something then i might just say bugger it, and ask him myself........i will of course make him ask me as well after that but just to get the ball rolling, you know?

Ohhhhh I am getting teary reading these stories, I LOVE engagement stories!!!

We were living in Hong Kong but about to move to SIngapore BUT also going home to NZ for a holiday in between, so I was hoping *maybe* he would ask my Dad about it then ....

The weekend before we came home was my birthday and I had a joint bday dinner with another friend. DH was sposed to come straight from work but he called to say he was going to be late (ON MY BIRTHDAY!) and I was so mad but we had a good night in the end.

The next day the movers came to pack all our stuff (to go to Singapore lol) and then we went to a hotel for a few days before we went back to NZ. I didn't know at the time, but DH had gone to pick up my engagement ring - making him late for my bday celebrations - and then hidden it in MY bag which I carried around all day when we were moving We went out for dinner that night and on the way back to our room he kept being silly and stopping and "doing up his shoelaces" so that I would walk into the room first.

When I went into the room, there on the bed was this ring box. I don't know what I thought housekeeping would be doing leaving jewellery boxes on our bed but I totally didn't click! Till I turned around to say WTF?! to DH and he was down on one knee

I knew DH was going to propose as he had decided but we were living os and getting married impacted our decision on where we lived etc. Basically he asked if I would ever consider getting married where we were living rather than here or home (aus). I said yes and waited....

A couple of months later we were on minibreak in Prague and we spent an afternoon at the zoo. Standing over the meercat enclosure I turned around to see DH on one knew with his hand outstreached.. I thought he was asking me to help him up LOL. He was so overcome that he was speechless and couldnt get the words out, but I eventually saw the ring and said yes LOL.

Loving the proposal stories.
My Dh slung the ring (still in the jeweller's bag and box) at towards me in bed.
Yeah, that's it. I forced him to say the words "will you marry me".
I told him I thought he would put a ring in the fishtank or something a bit more surprising and he thought it was so brilliant and wished he'd done that.

Loving the stories!

We have a similar story in that DH was supposed to be studying for a big exam but decided to go play golf for the day (or so he told me) and I had a huge hissy fit at him for wasting our money and not taking the degree seriously etc but off he went to 'play golf'. I found out later that he drove about 3 hrs up country to meet a guy that he had arranged to bring my engagement ring from Sydney (we are in the UK) where a jeweller friend had made it for him all on the secret squirel I had absolutely no idea.

Then on our 5th anniversary we went to Monaco for a romantic holiday and at a special dinner on our anniversary night we had just ordered desert and the lights in the restaurant went really low and I remember thinking how rude we cant see what we are eating, and then my desert arrived and it was a gorgeous chocolate tiramisu with the words Will You Marry Me in chocolate across the plate and a strawberry flower with a beautiful solitaire diamond in it.

I was in shock and kept saying Oh Wow over and over tee hee and then he asked the big Q and I said Yes and all the restaurant diners applauded

well I proposed to DH. it was his birthday and cooked this 3 course meal and as I served up dinner I tried to ask him, but started crying - I know sill my. Anyway he knew what I was going to say and said yes

My proposal was just.... ahhh.... I was made to walk 30 minutes round the streets near my home (passing countless friends wondering what the hell was going on) up a hill in the middle of a development block. He got down on one knee but I was so embarrased, I was sure all those people we had walked passed we still watching, I slid down the hill and hid in the grass. DH was not impressed, it was a quick "will you marry me" I said yeah. I guess the romance was lost when we found out we were pregnant (at 18!) and we both decided we wanted to be married before the baby arrived, we had already pretty much sorted the lot before he proposed.

DH still had a bit to pay off on my ring when I found out about it and we were meant to be flat hunting but decided instead of moving we'd save the cost of moving and pay off the ring and get engaged instead.  This convo happened in a taxi and the driver was grinning when he dropped us back home.

I spent the day with my sister and her daughter (which is where the official story begins) and when I got home DH had planned an evening out.  We walked through the botanical gardens reminiscing, went to a nice restaurant for dinner and drinks, went home for dessert and it wasn't until the end of the evening that he finally proposed.  I almost thought he'd changed his mind and it wasn't going to happen but then he put on a piece of music he knew I wanted played at my wedding and he had a whole speech written (including telling me it took so long to propose because he wasn't sure he wanted to be part of my family).  In the end it was all very romantic.
