I think with the new threads, they are touching on some really really heartbreaking sensitive issues, and people (especially if they are writing through their grief ) are going to take things more personally than they normally would .

Oh I agree, and the fact that there are people going through heart ache that unless we have experienced it we can never imagine , is for front at my mind .
And if it was my friend, then yes , I would come and defend them .
I always go by that motto, put yourself in others shoes , and another one I go by ,is "is it necessary , is it hurtful , and is it the truth "
And a lot of the time , the answer is no.

Im sorry that they didn't get a warmer welcome and that their posts were met with some negativity , I don't and wont feel guilty tho , all I did was offer my condolences

I just think we have lost sight of the fact that 2 beautiful children left our earth far too soon.

Of course there is going to be tensions running high and I challenge anyone of you (regulars or newbies) to say you wouldnt jump to the defense of your friend if you FELT they were being treated unfairly.

Sometimes we all just need to step back and put ourselves in the other person shoes before we start typing.. that age old saying of think before you speak.

i dont mind new members, love them in fact. I just wish that instead of someone seeing a thread on google or wherever and posting to tell off the individual member or members who they think are offending someone they would stick around!

no elitism or them or us... just hate the oncers who think we are insulting a particular group or person...

and i think that maybe the title or specifically the reference to interlopers is not the title i really wanted, but of course once i thought of a better one i couldnt amend it.

I agree with this, but I don't get why anyone has a problem with people coming on to give an opinion about something that differs to an opinion already given. IMO in neither thread were the newbies telling anyone off, they were just correcting comments made that were incorrect. That was how I took it anyway.

Saying that people can't post unless they write an introduction or agree with all comments made by other members makes it an exclusive club, not the fact that you've posted numerous times and have friends on here. I wasn't taking a dig at long standing or regular members more those that feel that the site somehow belongs to them.

Im unaware that I was part of an exclusive "club" , as far as I knew I was a member of Ohbaby , and I don't think I need to feel guilty of acting like Im part of a clique , but since i've been on here so long, there are people I will joke more with , that I 'know' a bit better .

i think there is a difference between expressing an opinion about something and telling off other people for expressing their opinion or is noone allowed to question anything these days? I dont want to feel like i have to consider every possible way what im about to say could offend someone everytime i want to post.

We manage to have plenty of threads on here that get heated without newbies popping in stirring it up so its not entirely the interlopers i have issue with. Arguments and differeing opinions are just what happens when you get a bunch of people discussing something who arent all clones and actually think for themselves.

I have had two occasions on this forum where I have posted and the same person has 'chased' me to get a reaction. The first time I was a relatively newbie to the site and was in a pretty bad place after a miscarriage, and I didn't come across as well or as clear as I should have, and got MAJORLY defensive, and I was jumped on. However, the second time she tried to wind me up, I just ignored her.

I have been a participant on another forum to do with horse sport, for over 10 years, and I have seen it ALL on there - anonymous postings, blatant lies which trip the poster up eventually, threats of law suits, stalking, even violent threats...!!

Yea, I reckon we've got a responsibility to be nice. That's just plain decency. I've seen posts from time to time where I thought the same point could have been made in a much nicer way, and I kinda can't figure out why people don't take the time to do that.

On the other hand, have you seen some other forums? This one really is great! When you get a lot of different people together in one place, you're gonna get the odd difference of opinion, but I think as a whole the OB boards are great.

On the H.O.P.E. thread - after saying I hate newbies signing up to ask for something, that kind of doesn't both me quite so much. I think perhaps I'm biased - after TTC for so long, I kind of understand how you'd try anything. I also question the moderating posts because of unladylike decorum? Exactly who's standards are we using? Yeah not the best timing on their part, although they do have a name at the clinic to contact so they are most likely genuine.

Raspberry I tend to agree, I think with the other thread it should have been remembered that the people who were posting are women who have lost children and who personally know the women who the story was about. Once everyone knew it was genuine (and that the thread had been linked to the facebook page and they hadn't just randomly been looking for a fight) I believe some backing off should have been done. Yes their response may have came across a bit rude, but the boards response back was less than nice. These women have lost babies, something I can't even begin to comprehend and it is no wonder that they are perhaps a little more emotionally charged than most, we (as in the board) should have responded with compassion not with a "this is our board, don't like it feck off" attitude. I think given the way those threads were handled they were a lot politer than I would have been had it have been my friend and after coming to verify the story getting such an onslaught for joining an open forum

We have actually had a few (well at least one I can think of right now) who have lied about losing babies so yes it does actually happen which is why a lot of us might question it. I quite like this site the most of the time, but over the last few days I have been quite shocked at how insensitive people are, and sometimes down right rude and b***chy. We are all grown woman and mothers, or mums to be or would love to be, I think we should all be excercising alot more empathy and sensitivity.

And you do a great job too, Maya. I think it's a combination of the mods (and the environment encouraged by the website) and the members, but OB is one of the most positive, friendly boards I've ever been involved with. I was gobsmacked by the lack of catfights when I joined (and distinctly remember posting something completely opposite to what someone had just said, and totally expecting to be flamed - instead I was met with a friendly, sensible answer, and I've been a keen mamber since )

Hi ladies (and gentlemen),
Wow, lots of things to address!

1. Interlopers - I know that OHbaby! is a close community, and that's one of the reasons many of you frequent OHbaby!, but it is still a public website, and the forums are open. You don't have to register to read posts, you do have to register to post messages. I agree that asking new members to post an introduction has its merits, but it may also discourage people from using the forums as it does make it look a little more "cliquey". We also don't have the technology to force new members to post in any given thread before their membership becomes active, nor do we have the time to do that manually.

2. Spam - I was under the impression that we don't have much of a problem with spam, only the occasional post? I do a check of the forums each weekday and remove any spam, but we do rely on people reporting spam posts to help us identify them as the forums are so big that even a full-time moderator would have trouble keeping on top of every single thread.

3. Reporting posts - as has been mentioned, at the top of each post is a link to report that post. These reports come thru to each of the Admin team and we address each one as soon as we possibly can, so if a particular post or thread bothers you, please do report it. We also have a filter which stops posters using offensive words.

4. Moderators - we currently have four forum moderators (the details are in the Forum Guidelines and messages from admin section, but basically it's myself, Katherine, Angela and Kelly). This seems to be working okay at this stage. We do discuss the forums at our regular team meetings so if any issues arise we can address them.

5. Guidelines on posting of external links - it appears there is a bit of confusion here, so hopefully I can clarify it a little. Links to other websites are not allowed unless it contributes to the nature of the discussion. This includes competitions and "vote for me/my child" threads. Examples of what might be acceptable are links to parenting-related articles (for example new research on immunisation, the Facebook link that was the initial source of this thread and news items in the News section), and links to products and services in the Product Reviews section where the purpose is to review a product or service, and where that product or service is NOT one in which you have a financial interest (ie. it's not a link to your own product/service). We do delete threads which contravene these guidelines, but again, we do often rely on the report posts function to notify us of these as we can't be everywhere at the same time.

I like seeing others ventures, but it would be too hard for OB to police advertising vs 'hey look at what I can do' so they have to make that rule to save their own business.

I hate vote for me threads - but hey I just don't go in them - and same goes for other threads that don't interest me. I'm not going to worry about them though, there's plenty of things in life that I don't like, I just ignore them

I like the freedom of this board and while we sometimes have people coming on here to post on a particular thread or whatever, that's the nature of the internet, and if you tried to police it too much then it wouldn't be such a great place to be (I'm talking about OB, not the web in general).

I also hate the vote for me threads so I either don't go in them or vote for someone else. Actually I have issues with baby photo contests anyway I find it so wrong to vote on a baby for its cuteness and they always turn into a popularity contest anyway so why not just make it a blatant popularity contest. Anyway thats my rant for the day.

I also didnt say that Kylie's post wasnt against the rules (and actually suggested when she mentioned it on FB that it go in the Ob meet up section) I just said I find the vote for me posts more annoying because there is always someone wanting you to vote, I also think that its ok in your due thread, because you are asking your "friends" not just every tom dick and harry that frequents the oh baby forum.

This would be my guess too.

Personally, I only find the voting stuff annoying if it's a totally random person who has never been on OB before, who has signed up just to get votes. If it's someone who is clearly a legitimate member, and has been around for a while then I don't see the harm in it.
