Oh I forgot about the drain I had one too... that has to be the biggest driving force to having a vbac I can still remember having that removed.

Wow things are very different between surgeons and hospitals!!

I had my first c/s in 1998, an emergency. Had an epidural, no stockings, no injections, a delightful drain that was removed the next night , internal stitches that dissolved. Pain relief were panadol suppositories, tablets and voltaren tablets. None of this morphine business! I was allowed out of bed the next morning, helped to the shower and the nurse left me to it. I ended up flaked out on the floor of the shower, was discovered by my friend's midwife who'd come to say hi.

Second c/s in August, elective this time. Same hospital. Had a spinal, the sexy stocking until I went home, injections the first two nights (stayed 3), dissolvable stitches again, no drain this time (YAY!!!). Had the morphine pump until 10am the next morning, then the tablets for maybe another 24 hours but refused them after I started seeing spiders on the walls and bed. Also got fed panadol and ibuprofen regularly. I insisted DF was there when I went for my first shower because I was scared of flaking again. This time the midwife stayed in the bathroom with me, she said she had to stay. It was fine until some really large clots fell out and I got dizzy. Next thing there were several midwives in there plus DF. I had a hideous scar from my first c-section. With my 2nd c-section it just healed exactly the same. I never had slow realise morphine, just the pump, which they took off my 6 hours after his birth cos I wasn't using it and then voltaren, codiene and panadol. I stopped taking the voltaren and codiene though cos something made me spew and I thought either of those might be the culprit and I would rather a bit of pain than puking so badly that they had to give me another drug to stop me puking.

I can't feel any scar tissue at all. My mw with Kyle was amazed at how tidy my scar is and you can barely see it, just a very thin faint line. I had the disolvable stitches with a knot at one end. I had a massive hemotoma (sp?) where they cut me which they were more concerned about than my cut    It was about the size of a foot print, looked delightful!!!!

2 years on I have a very very faint line that is not even 2 inches long. You can't even see it unless I point it out to someone (have shown a few girlfriends that were lucky enough to have natural births)!

Can anyone else feel the scar tissue on their abdominal muscles underneath your skin? Such a weird feeling and it grosses me out!!

Same here - think I was in the week before Imogen. Have to say my scar has healed perfectly, I was expecting a big raised, wonky scar (like what your cat looks like after they've been speyed! ) but it's just an extremely narrow red line, not raised at all, just looks like a wrinkle. Mine was emergency c-section too.

My ones were like Melnel's - knots at the end and dissolvable. No staples internally either- my OB did stitches. I know because I asked him because I was fascinated with the whole thing.

The anti-clotting must have been administered by IV because I definitely didn't get injections either time.

Had a spinal block first time and epi the second but I was hooked up to the morphine pump with both. Then once it ran out onto the slow release morphine.

And yes I had to wear the sexy stocking socks too. Melnel, I had an older male doctor do the surgery and I'm fairly sure my midwife actually pulled some stitches out. yeah i know..:) but i felt like i was doing something..she said every five mins but i am pretty sure you were right..kinda like i wanted to suck the gas even after it was switched off.. just made me feel like i as getting relief..they took it away after not that long cause ti was making me sick.. sounds similiar freesia but there was nothing to pull out just snipped the knots off the end.. think it was disolvable..

ok just searched it, heparin is an anticoagulant (anti clotting) and clexane is a make of drug that contains heparin.

i just kept pressing morphine button..lol this time will be better hopefully..so what are the heparin he was talking about ,....i thought that was the injection..is that something else?

We might've had the same surgeon melnel. You couldn't see my stitches externally either and there were two ball type things at each edge where it was tied off. To remove it the mw just snipped the ends off and pulled it through it one go. It was a weird uncomfortable feeling but didn't hurt. My scar is really minimal also.

I had the morphine pump too but only used it once when the nurse was showing me how to use it. Stitching etc is based on the surgeon. I has stitches but internally and tied on the outside. Its hard to explain but my mw had never seen it and thought she had to pull them out.. after a few tugs a begged her to ring and ask as I was SURE the surgeon said just to snip the knots.

Thank god she did ring as I was right, phew! She was trying to pull out one large continuos sewn stitch.

Very rare but i have a great scar (and it took blarrdy ages to be sewn up, but apparently less scar tissue).

I had the pump until it ran sometime within the first 24 hours then slow release tabs also at NSH...

Mine was an emergency section.. but not crash and I had PE very low platelets too.

With my first section I had disolvable stiches with a dressing that was changed daily. Had the clexane injections and the stockings. Had the morphine pump for the first 24hrs or so and then went onto the slow release tablets. This was in Feb 2007 at National Womans

Funny how there is a standard way of doing things. I asked my MW about stitches vs staples and she said that it usually depends on the surgeon. Staples are quicker. I found that I healed much better with the staples. My wound was completely healed from the outside by the time the dressing was taken off and the staples removed. bizarre i had no stockings....

! i had very low platelets and a lot of blood loss(1000mls) and that was partly why it was so important apparently.. which sounds backwards to me!:)

i had the tape too...yeah he said its changed in the last 2 years.. i had the pump

i think that the larger you are the more likely you are to have them. clotting seems to be more of an issue for bigger lasses! I had the morphine pump (didn't much use it though as it didn't seem to do anything apart from make me itchy), I don't know if i had stitches or not, how terrible is that, I didn't need to have anything taken out and all that seemed to be holding my outside skin together was a bit of tape, so maybe I had dissolvable stitches? I had the injections but no sexy stockings. My c/s was 2.5 years ago.

Okay, well if they give you injections in your tummy over the space of 4 days then I DEFINITELY didn't have them! And no sexy stocking either....

Weird I reckon. I dunno what the difference would be to having or not having the injections??
Maybe it is a newish thing? Alex is 5 & Blaire is coming up to 4 so maybe the anti clotting injection came in after that time??
I know I had a bit of difference just between my boys.
With Alex I had a morphine pump straight after the surgery that I could push a button for pain every 5mins & I also had dissolvable stitches.

I don't recall having the injections either and I'm sure I'd remember a jab in my stomach for a few days after!! I didn't have to wear stockings either. Ha the stockings, i hated them sooo much, it was still pretty hot in March... i got them off around day 2. By yeah i got the jabs for 5 days, and i had a transfusion. Strange some dont have them, although lucky is another word that comes to mind! I was crying so much on the 5th day begging for her to let me go with out it! I didnt succeed!

I had them after my emergency c-section with Jamie, I believe they are Clexane, but don't quote me on that one! I think I was given either two or three.   I was so groggy for the first few days I don't remember!    They stung a bit but I didn't care after my horrible labour.

I didn't have them after my elective c-section with Sam, so not sure if that makes a difference.   Although it could just be a recent thing?   It's been over 2.5 years since I had Sam.

exactly what cuppatea said..anti clotting(they talked a lot about ti to me cause i lost a reasonable amount of blood) i specifically asked and he said everyone should have them.. though i have to wait till 39 weeks for c section not everyone has to do that:(!!!

I had to wear those pressure stocking things and had to do exercises for my legs/toes while I was there to help with clots but that's the extent of it I think.

I hate needles so I'm sure I would've remembered if I'd had them. I had mine for 5 days, first one roughly 12 hours after c/s and thereafter 24 hourly, I was given an extra one "may as well as you're still here" was what the mw said (we were kept in longer cos Spencer had jaundice). And yep it is an anti clotting drug because the surgery increases your risk of having a blood clot go to your heart or brain (I know the word for that but no idea how to spell it), it was something that the aneasthetist went over in great detail and part of what you have to sign when you consent to the surgery.

When do they give them?
I don't think I would have noticed when I was on the operating table so if they were given then, then I might have had them without knowing?
