Geez that must be pretty scary for Mike (and you). Is there no way you could beg or borrow the money to get the operation private? Maybe the clinic would do a payment plan? That would be so horrible to loose your sight.

Thanks - was the 2nd person to leave - it went well for the first paper.. only 1 more to do this afternoon - but so far so good.

Only sucky thing is that mike had an appointment with optometrist this morning and i couldn't go with him (he's been having trouble with his eyes recently) and he found out that he has cataracts in both eyes.. so will be full blown in about 3 years time - and it is only once he has lost sight that he will be put on a waiting list to have them removed... so feeling bad i could not be there for him, and feeling a bit sad cos he will loose sight and possibly have to wait for up to a year after that to regain it. and what can he do in that time? i mean old people are usually retired - but mike might have to stop work or something i dunno. so icky

lol we got broadband last month - cos Mike HAD TO HAVE IT, henceforth he used it all up in the first week watching all his damn motorsport speedway videos and we went back down to dial-up speed! ARGH! was so angry. I can see how valuable it is, really, lol.... for about a week a month.

Oh neonates, not many get to go there, so best of luck for that. And the best thing if you get there is that you have kids so know what the families are going through. I found that the worst thing when I was in the post natal ward and there was a nurse there who hadn't had children so didn't know what I was feeling like. It must be tough on her, espeially since she's had her kids, and now doing it all again. I hope she gets the respite care sorted. He's just got out of hospital cos he had a chest infection pretty bad but otherwise he seemst o be going ok, same as usual really, some days he is a happy boy others you go to see them and he looks like the lights are on but no-one's home, away in a dream world kinda sick and stuff. oh well done, let us know how you get along. My sister is and ED nurse and loves it, she has done it over in London, America, it really can take you anywhere if you wanted to go. Her hubby has just been given a job in Cambridge (England) kind of the same sort of training thing but he is a surgeon, all very exciting.

I have applied with my preferences being neonates and children's ward (really would love neonates but kiddies ward would be just as great!!) next preferences would be theatre and recovery/day of surgery type thing, then my next is medical ward - mainly cardiac care unit or something like that.

We have about 30 in our class, not to mention many people take about 6 months aout sometimes and apply mid year when there is less competition (those that finish in november usually have a class of between 50 - 70!, plus there are the massey nursing students as well and i think there might be only about 16 places on the programme so here's keeping fingers crossed.

And yep the new grad programme is basically what has already been explained - a programme that gives you a contract for 12 months where by you are supported through your first year of practice as a registered nurse and fill in booklets and do tests and show that you are competent to do things yourself - so that you aren't thrust out into the scary real world thinking "what on EARTH am i doing??!!" cos we have the knowledge and we have done practical stuff but alot comes on the job - for instance - as student we are not allowed to touch IV's, we can prepare the bag to go up in the med room but cannot hook it up monitor it, change them or touch them once they are in the patient.. so we gotta learn that. At the end of 12 months there is usually no prob in assuming that you will still have your job (if you want it!) as long as you have proven yourself to be a valuable member of staff that they want to keep - i mean they have invested alot in you so mostly they kinda want to keep you. lol

I can explain that for you Andie, I have had a BIL and now ex SIL do the programme. It is job placement and job secerty at the hospital. It involve further study - really just on the job training such as doing IV's and then getting signed off so you can do them by yourself. Some wards have specialist things you have to learn eg ED learning about fast efficent ways of doing things. ICU premium care for patients. Well thats the jist of it. If i've missed anything Janine will fill in the gaps. My now ex SIL has been at the Palmy hospital for 4 years now and has just moved wards and she said the past 2 weeks feel like she is back on the new grad programme but with the "you have been working for 4 years now you should know what you are doing" attitude. Janine you will be fine. What ward are you looking at going into? Yay, got a letter this evening saying i have got an interview for a place on the new grad program at palmy hospital....

Am now freaking out.

Not till 26th, so i have about 10/11 days to prepare - i have the questions they are gonna ask me so i can prepare - am just freaking out a little cos you have to demonstrate skills etc as well - and i have no idea which ones, and there are some that i have not done for a while since i have not been placed in the hospital. so i am freaking out.

but YAY!
