We ususally do stuff for Valentine's Day - buy a nice card then treat her to what it is that she likes, I'm making Dh chocolate cup cakes, and going to the movies.
Nice smellies are always lovely, or a nice back massage, he could offer to make her dinner.

I love kitchen stuff, Dh scored big brownie points when he brought me a scanpan for christmas - esp after his workmates hassled him about it.

LF poems are sweet. My DH wrote me heap of love letters that I keep in a box, that was before we were married now he sends texts, ha ha, technology eh?

great ideas ladies, I've passed them on. Apparently she does like homemade type stuff and had brought her some kitchen stuff for her birthday which is why she was less than impressed!

I think he is going to try and write something and create a bit of a homemade 'pamper hamper' for her.

Oooh Jazzy just cos she didnt like her birthday present doesnt mean she wouldnt be happy with homemade from the heart - he might have gotten her a pair of kitchen sizzors (sp) like my Dad got my Mum one year... suffice to say she wasnt impressed LOL

Lots of nice suggestions from the others here, I'm sure if he really thinks about the things she likes that one of those options will stand out as the right one.

hmmm sounds like she will not be happy with anything cheap or homemade & from the heart.

He could buy a charm for a bracelet he will get for her next b'day or xmas. Or lay-by something & pay it off, & give her a card & the date it will be payed off.

But to be honest I would not bother if someone is more interested in big $$$ gifts than the reason it is for it, they will never be satisfied. single red rose
chocolate
card
fish n chips or picnic at beach or somewhere
pamper day for her- bath bomb, mag, chocolate bar, wine

SD usually writes me a poem, he spends quite a lot of time on them, I have them in a scrapbook, although the one he gave me for our first anniversary is framed and hanging in our bedroom.

Another thing he could do is make up gift vouchers ...
