what a fanastic birth story so fulled with love and honesty. So lucky to have such a supportive family who loved her and the baby unconditionally and full of acceptance. what a great dad she has who prayed fro her and NElla.

We had a risk of 1:250 with our new baby, We decided to tell our family that there may be a small chance our baby could have DS, DH family were horriffed and shocked and disgusted . I was so mad that they could be so judgemental and unsupportive. They said of course "you'll never have more kids if this one has that". how could they!

It really opened our eyes to how some people can
be so mean, our own family! i was so suprised at their reaction as it was only a small risk.

my family were fine and offered support and love.

Baby was born without DS, but still isn't good enough for DH family who wanted a girl.!

This made me mad/sad because it's their loss, he is wonderful and we are so blessed to have two darling boys.

Yep, a friend of my mothers had the nuchal fold scan done and had a very very low risk of downs, yet her baby was born with quite severe DS.

I was such a blubbering mess through the story, (I never cry usually though things like that!!), the pictures diffenately made it, I loved the bit about the sister's first hug etc...

Please correct me if I'm wrong but it is impossible to tell if a baby has downs from a scan. I could see a lot of similarities between Nella and my cousin who has DS, so could see it straight away (and I guess cos I knew before I saw the pics that Nella has DS than I was looking for it)

Cs stepmum and her dad knew from the scan at 20 weeks they were having a boy , Downs wasn't diagnosed until he was 6 weeks, maybe a week older come to think of it .
He has the "look " of a downs baby , but he also looks quite a lot like his brothers, and the other traits that are common in downs babies , poking tongue out a lot , wide gap between big toe and next one etc they didn't know about .
It wasn't until her plunket nurse picked up on his lack of movement at 6 weeks that any concern was made, and even then they had to wait til a blood test contirmed it before they could say for certain .
Scans don't always pick it up , a blood test is certain (after baby is born )

anyway , beautiful story , I just read it again .

She said in another blog entry that they had declined any testing. Americans seem to do birth differently - the favours, the glasses and dozens of people would do my head in.

If they knew it was going to be a girl, how come they didn't know she was going to be DS before the birth?

i didnt even know my kids name, let alone be prepared enough to have wine glasses and gifts with their name ready to go. super organised is what i call that! i was reminded of my labour wih gabriel tho when i had my nieces and nephews in the suite practising breathing methods with me! Caitlyn's stepmum sent this to me the other day , their boy was born a week before Tyler ( so lucky C got 2 brothers in a fortnight ) and was diagnosed with DS at 6 weeks, so this story is obviously quite special to her, I thought it was one ,if not ,the , most beautiful birth stories i've read , the part where she describes her daughter looking up saying " I know im not what you expected, but please, oh please, love me " gave me chills , what a beautiful way to describe it .
What a fantastic family , that baby is very lucky .
