I couldn't care less now about midwife follow up (she finally showed up yesterday and I could hardly be civil to her) and I'd certainly prefer it if someone else came.

Julz, I completely agree. I can appreciate how hard a job it is dealing with potentially hormonal, scared, irrational women at all hours of the day/night. And many friends have raved about their midwives and the service they have provided, so I know there are good ones out there. I work in the acute health system so I also know how busy it can be so I didn't have a huge problem during the pregnancy when over 50% of my appointments were with a range of back up midwives. It was the lack of coordination of services post delivery that I'm most upset by. There is no excuse for the service not following up the clients when one midwife is on leave.

Write a complaint to either the Home Care Team Leader or Quality Manager giving them your daughter's hospital number and your hospital number. Give all the details of what happened and what the issues were re service delivery. Be explicit that it is a complaint (this starts a clear process within the DHB and gets flagged to GM level). They have 28 days to respond to you. There's obviously an issue between the services but using the wrong referral format - geez louise, all that takes is for them to call the referrer and say "hey, can you send it through on this form". Which, in their defence, they may have done and NICU dropped the ball etc ...

Good luck.

It's your right to complain and by doing so, even if you don't really see any immediate consequence, you might just make it easier or better for other mums after you

I wish I had made a complaint against this one registrat from my daughters birth- he did so many things wrong and I was in real danger and he got told off in front of us by more than one staff member- was even made to come back and apologise to me but I was so wasted from lack of blood that I don't even remember what he said. At the time I just wanted to get out of there and not think about it but now that I realise how much damage was done and I will probably never be able to have a natural birth I go and WISH I had done something about it then!
