Hey hun, we were in the same boat when we got pregnant after having Eva, and to be honest, getting a private OB never crossed my mind. We were referred to the antenatal clinic at the hospital and saw the specialist there maybe 2-3 times nearer the end of the pregnancy, but this was mainly due to Cooper being breech.

I was just on 5mg of folic acid to prevent spina bifida again as you are, that's about all you can do anyway. To be fair I did have quite a lot of scans but this was more due to the fact that a) I have a radiologist and a sonographer in my immediate family, and b) he was breech until 38 weeks.

I think you are pretty safe just going with your midwife, as long as you have a good one!!! Good luck hun

My mum offered the same thing when we were having trouble TTC and looked like we were gonna m/c Clodagh...but like you said an Ob can't do anything that a mw can't do and you WILL be referredif mw thinks there is a need. I personally wouldnt either, its an awful lot of money that doesnt change the outcome... as long as you have a good mw... which I hope you get a fantastic one this time.

Stacey, my parents offered to pay for a specialist for #1 as I have a couple of conditions that they didn't think I'd be able to labour through easily but in the end I discovered exactly the same as you - I couldn't get more than what I could having a m/w for the specific issues I had. So we just went with the hospital team when the time came.

For your case, it's hard to say because I haven't been there, but I would think like you said it doesn't make a difference to the end result.

I have enough clout to not be kicked out of a place. I was pushed to leave with Daniel but I told them to get f**ked lol.

The thing with the ob's in Palmy is that I don't actually like any of the ones that I've seen (and I've seen most of them).

I'm lucky in that I don't have a problem giving birth thus far.

Now, I see it differently. I went with an OB for both of mine and they were worth every cent! I had someone in "my court" that had all the facts....nothing against MWs but they can only do so much before an OB might need to take over so better to have one in the loop so to speak.

With Tom I worried that I had totally wasted my money as I saw her briefly a few times during my pregnancy and was in and out of her rooms faster than I could drink my coffee. She was a godsend at delivery though. My MW was excellent but within minutes of the OB arriving, I got the epi that the MW had been asking for for ages. I also got to stay in hospital with Tom when I may have otherwise been kicked out. She just had more clout. Even my MW said that.

After Tom's birth wasnt so straight forward I opted for an OB for my second pregnancy. This was even more important as a) my MW was a totally dick and b) it ended in a c-section.

If we go for no 3 I will definitely use her again.no hesitation.

They may cost but they are great peace of mind.

I think I'd think along the same lines as you seem to be - they won't be able to change anything, and you're doing everything you can anyway. If there was any reason for your MW to think you'd be under better care with an OB, she'd refer you anyway. So as kind as their offer is, I don't think I'd take them up on it.

The only reason I'd do it is if I was really stressing, and an OB would give me more peace of mind. In that case, it could be really helpful for you.

When you see the MW ask what she thinks about the OB, if she thinks it is agood idea that you be under an OB and you can't go under the public system take them up on the offer.

Um, probably not then if they can't do anything more than a mw, and I assume that if a mw decides later on that you need an ob you will be referred and it will be free? I would just thank them profusely, explain that a mw can do everything for you and that you might take them up on the offer later if it becomes necessary.

I think no just because an ob cant really do anything that a MW cant do. Nothing either of them do will prevent another spina bifida bub so I don't know if I see the point in spending the inlaws money like that for no benefit.
