My cot has solid ends as well and I still use a bumper with no probs.

I think it's a case of - where would you tie it? Jae has had one right from the first day in her cot too, its quite stiff so she couldnt possible pull it down over her face, and has tonnes of ribbons all the way around (its a full length one) which at first I thought was a pain in the a$$ to tie them all, but I see now that the more ribbons tied to the bars, the more secure it is. And as a PP said, mine is wedged down a little bit between the matress and bars so she can get underneath the bumper

This was her first sleep in the cot, duvet and toys were merely for the photograph, but I will be using the duvet this winter.

thanks for the thoughts on the bumper issue.
just got it out to discover two things
- it's designed for a cot with rails all round, ours has solid ends

If you can secure the bumper so that bubs can't get underneath it, e.g. by shoving it down the side of the mattress so only a little bit sticks up, and tie it securely on then it should be fine. We put it in the cot when H started crawling around in the cot and banging head on bars ... from about 6-7 months I think? He quite often gets into the corner, bunches it down and uses it as a pillow. Strange little boy. what about the "airwrap" bumper.. they are a thick mesh and a lot safer than the quilt type.. they breath.. DS is 7 months and started dangling his legs out the sides and ramming his head into the top... ever since i put that on a week ago... hes 'slept like a baby' hehehehehe

I had the problem of my DH waking in the night when she was 7-8 months (she would be so jammed up against the cot bars she'd have red grooves on her head), a mummy on here suggested a tri pillow (which is much bigger than the bumpers) and from the first night having it in her cot she has slept through.  Not for everyone but it worked for us.

I used one right from the beginning. I just sewed some ribbon on the bottom to tie it. I brought one when DS was about 6-7 months as he would wriggle and hit his head lots. It worked to a degree and he stopped waking so much in a night.

DS2 has it on already as he likes to sleep in funny positions also.

I'm thinking exactly the same thing at the moment DD keeps hitting her head on the cot (she is a little gymnast in her bed) and it sounds like it hurts! Well I did the opposite and used it for decoration before DS could move about in the cot. Once he started rolling etc I removed it as I felt it was a suffocation risk as he is often has his face right up by the bars where the cot bumper would be.

When I was pregnant, we bought a cot quilt and bumper set from baby factory. Then I when I started ready about baby stuff I discovered that quilts & bumpers were not recommended on new born 's cots.

So when is it ok to use them?

DS has discovered he can move in his cot, and I often find him sideways crying and it looks like he's hitting his head against the side rails of the cot. Then all of a sudden I thought - they're called bumpers because they're to soften the blow when baby bumps their head against the cot rails - a moment of epiphany.
